As a general rule I think transparency is usually the best policy for most things, but I certainly don't support cherry picking where and when it should be applied for political reasons.

Whether it's assisinine for him to do depends what works in his favor. The people it will upset most are probably people who wouldn't vote for him anyway. The people who will vote for him no matter what may not like it, but it wont cost him votes. So he's doing a cost benefit analysis. There's a lot of proof that you can be an ass and still be elected president.

This is why you want regulations around transparency rather than ortunistic, partisan, bellyaching masquerading as ideals.

But no one will push for regulating transparency because it might apply to them too.

The transcripts are out there. The Special Council said he was an old mush brain. What exactly does he think he's hiding by blocking the tapes, other than further cementing what most took away from the report? I could understand the logic if the horse hadn't already left the barn.

If the horse is out of the barn why bother putting the recording out?

If nothing new comes out most media outlets will lose interest and move on looking for another scandal pretty quickly. Most voters probably don't even know this is a thing right now, they're all caught in a haze of whether stormy spanked Trump with a magazine. If the media get their hands on new audio clips it drags the negative attention back onto Biden and it gets an extra couple weeks in the news cycle.

That "transparency" they're always go on about. Nobody has forgotten either, and the President invoking privilege to keep it out of the public eye, only serves to confirm that he's embarrassed about how he comes off.
