You know the weird thing is that Singapore is ethnic Chinese run but there were/are Indians in high political positions. Are Singapore ethnic Chinese a little different from ethnic Chinese in other S.E. Asian countries?
Are they the same in terms of ideology? I don't think they are a monolithic block per country.
For every Chinese ethno nationalist/Beijing shills in Malaysia and Indonesia, I think there are more pro equality and pro democracy Chinese in those countries.
The difference is Singapore is wealthy country and hence every ethnicity has a better opportunity for prosperity compared to say rural Indonesia where the ethic Chinese gets into economic competition against the Javanese and other groups and that builds resentment.
