LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas police officer was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in federal prison for stealing nearly $165,000 in a trio of casino heists, including one in which he was found guilty of brandishing a department-issued weapon.

Caleb Rogers, who has been on unpaid suspension in a solo jail cell since his arrest nearly 20 months ago, apologized before sentencing. His mother, Crystal Rogers, of Toledo, Ohio, told the judge that she was “not pleased” but that her son had full family support.

Rogers, 35, brandished the gun during his arrest in February 2022 following a brief struggle with casino security officers in a parking lot not far from the Las Vegas Strip. One guard was so shaken he said he left the job shortly afterward and moved to a new line of work altogether.

Caleb Rogers, wearing eyeglasses, a beard and yellow jail clothing, with his dark hair pulled back in a short ponytail, said all he does while sitting alone in jail is think about “the effect that this has had on my family and everyone.”

“I do understand my mistakes,” he said, “and I pray for a chance at redemption.”

U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon said he understood that Rogers struggled with a gambling addiction and financial troubles and credited him with service to the community.

Richard Pocker, Rogers’ lawyer, sought leniency, saying his client has a young son, helped with a family ministry, assisted homeless people and was an emergency medical technician before becoming a Las Vegas police officer in 2015.

“It’s ironic that his status as a police officer should be a reason to punish him more harshly,” Pocker said.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Tuesday that Rogers’ job status will be determined by an internal investigation that has not yet been completed.

The judge sentenced Rogers to less than a possible maximum of 22 years. He imposed an additional three years of supervised release after prison and ordered Rogers to pay $85,310 in restitution to the casinos.

“You served your community well for a time,” Gordon told Rogers. “Unfortunately, it appears your demons got the better of you.” Instead of seeking help, the judge said, Rogers committed armed robbery.

Rogers was a patrol officer at the time of the heists, which targeted casinos off the Strip beginning in November 2021. A jury found Rogers guilty in July of all three robberies and an enhancement for brandishing the weapon, which added a mandatory seven years to Rogers’ sentence.

Pocker said they will appeal the convictions and sentence to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. He called the U.S. government’s evidence linking his client to two of the robberies weak.

Throughout Rogers’ weeklong trial, prosecutors portrayed him as a gambling addict who grew increasingly desperate under a crush of debt. They say he recruited his younger brother to help him rob a casino in Summerlin, an affluent community in northwest Las Vegas.

Josiah Rogers testified under immunity from prosecution, recounting details of robbing a cashier at the Red Rock Casino in November 2021.

He said the brothers rehearsed for the pre-dawn robbery, scoped out the property and used code words in an encrypted messaging app to communicate their plans. Afterward, Josiah Rogers said, they spread the money across the dining table in their shared apartment, counting out $73,810.

Josiah Rogers said he kept $30,000 and moved the following week back to their hometown of Columbus, Ohio.

Caleb Rogers also was convicted of also robbing the Aliante Casino Hotel Spa in North Las Vegas of about $11,500 on Jan. 6, 2022.

About seven weeks later, prosecutors said Rogers stormed the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino’s sportsbook, shoved a cashier in her 60s out of his way and threatened to use a gun while he shoveled $79,000 into a drawstring bag hidden inside his jacket.

Within minutes, Rogers was tackled by a group of security guards outside the casino, sending a wig he’d been wearing flying off his head. The money in his jacket was recovered.

John C Drake, 38, is estranged son of metro police chief; officers treated in hospital after incident in city of La Vergne

Authorities in Tennessee were searching on Sunday for the estranged son of Nashville’s police chief as the suspect in the shooting of two police officers outside a Dollar General store.

Officers in La Vergne, a city about 20 miles (32km) south-east of Nashville, were investigating a stolen vehicle outside the store on Saturday afternoon when they struggled with the suspect, who pulled a handgun and shot them, said the local police chief, Christopher Moews.

Investigators identified the suspect as John C Drake Jr, 38, who is the son of Nashville’s metropolitan police department chief, John Drake.

One of the officers was shot twice, in the groin and right forearm, while the other officer was hit in the rear left shoulder. Both were taken to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University medical center.

One of the officers was released from the hospital on Saturday night. The other officer was kept overnight for observation and was in stable condition, said Anne Smith, a spokesperson for the city of La Vergne. Their identities have not been released.

The police chief issued a statement on Saturday confirming his son was the suspect in the shooting. Drake said they were estranged and over many years he had had only minimal contact with his son. The younger Drake is a convicted felon who “resorted to years of criminal activity”, he said.

“He now needs to be found and held accountable for his actions today. I hope that anyone who sees him or has information about him will contact law enforcement immediately,” Drake said in the statement.

Tennessee’s bureau of investigation said in a social media post that a statewide alert had been issued for Drake, who was wanted on two counts of attempted first-degree murder. Smith said about a dozen law enforcement agencies were involved in the search.

After the shooting, the La Vergne police issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the city. The shelter order was later lifted while the search for Drake continued, the department said in a social media post.

- I wond't get the risk. My borther got hit by a knife in his arm, while detaining a atackant that was trying to stab a security guard, and he is a black-belt in bjj. I'm a good kicker, but wond't assume the risk, did in simulations, but they're like video-games, wheres i can always trie again.

When we taught knife defense, we told the officers that you’re going to have to accept the fact that you’re likely going to get cut, but teaching them to minimize the available fatal cuts or stabs and keeping that shit to the hands or forarms. Even though it’s not a critical hit, getting a slice across the palm would suck a severely diminish your ability to fight as effectively and I can only imagine how much it would suck to have to draw a weapon and fire with a nasty cut there, but your only options are to retreat and put a barrier between you and the knife/blades weapon. I always taught my officers that cover in these situations is vital as it creates opportunities to draw your firearm and I always say “distance is your friend and there’s nothing wrong with a tactical retreat until you can get that space and be able to draw and fire.”

Terrifying moment Chicago mom and daughter are attacked at gunpoint by two thieves in their own driveway

Startling video shows the moment a Chicago mother and daughter were attacked at gunpoint and carjacked in their own driveway by two thieves, authorities say.

Michele Pettiford and her 12-year-old daughter were returning from a volleyball event when two unidentified men targeted them.

Video shows one of the attackers pushing Pettiford to the ground and demanding her car keys while snatching her purse. The other one is seen running behind her daughter, who got inside their house and called the police.

'I thought that they might have been my son’s friends because they had hoods up and they looked young and they were kind of lanky,' Pettiford said.

'And I started to kind of like, almost go towards them, because he wasn’t home at the time, and then they started, like, running at me with guns.'

Footage shows the attackers continuing to threaten Michele and rummaging through her purse while her husband, Jeff, walks out of their back door.

'The feeling and the sound; I'll never forget any of it, but that is probably going to stick around the longest,' Jeff told WBBM.

'She [the daughter] ran upstairs, used her phone, dialed 911. By the time we came back in, she was on the phone with 911; she handed it to me,' the distressed father said.

At one point, Michele is heard telling the carjackers the keys were in her purse while they feverishly searched for them.

Jeff is then seen trying to de-escalate the situation and pointing at his car parked in the driveway with the keys inside but one of the thieves manages to find Michele's keys and start her car.

The two suspects eventually jumped into her Audi A7 and drove off, leaving the traumatized parents on the ground in their own backyard.

Chicago is a diaster and nothing will likely change until they vote out the politicians.
