Is there a need for a 165 lbs category ?

I think it would be good for many fighters right in between. Diaz, Masvidal, Lee, Chiesa, Burns. And LWs like Ferguson, Conor, Poirier, RDA.

The big issue is what happens to WW with 165? It'd have to bump up to 175. So every WW would have to change their diet and training to either compensate for an additional 5 lbs or go harder and drop an additional 5.

The easier route would be 162.5 but that opens a possible flood gate of more micro divisions

Strawweight 115 lb (52.2 kg)
Flyweight 125 lb (56.7 kg)
Bantamweight 135 lb (61.2 kg)
Featherweight 145 lb (65.8 kg)
Lightweight 155 lb (70.3 kg)
Super lightweight 165 lb (74.8 kg)
Welterweight 170 lb (77.1 kg)
Super welterweight 175 lb (79.4 kg)
Middleweight 185 lb (83.9 kg)
Super middleweight 195 lb (88.5 kg)
Light heavyweight 205 lb (93.0 kg)
Cruiserweight 225 lb (102.1 kg)
Heavyweight 265 lb (120.2 kg)
Super heavyweight N/A

These are the weight classes that exist under the unified rules.

There have been countless lightweights who moved up to 170 and have seen significant success:

Serra
Masvidal
Chiesa
RDA
Cerrone
Penn

Conclusion: The notion of a 165 weight class is moronic.

Go with what works:
  • 57 kg (125 lbs)
  • 61 kg (134 lbs)
  • 65 kg (143 lbs)
  • 70 kg (154 lbs)
  • 74 kg (163 lbs)
  • 79 kg (174 lbs)
  • 86 kg (190 lbs)
  • 92 kg (203 lbs)
  • 97 kg (214 lbs)
  • 125 kg (276 lbs)

Let's be honest, here, from a business sense.

More divisions = More Champions
More Champions = More marketability and prestige for events
Gives the impression of a more stacked roster, more stacked events, more PPV buys.
And it will just showcase top talent that much more.

People worry that it will dilute the talent pool, I think it would do the opposite. More fighters would be fighting at their absolute best, closest to the natural weight.

More double champs (or even triple) would lead to way more prestige behind fighters (assuming that they would actually defend a belt)
