Fighter A is ranked above 10 fighters who he never fought cause he beat fighter B. is that not mma math?

i mean everyone goes on how mma math isnt accurate and is used by casuals etc.. no one stops to think that the entire rankings system is voted upon using mma math? you realize that most ppl at most divisions only have 2-3 top 15 wins?

a top 5 didnt beat the 10 guys behind him he beat 1 or 2 and using mathematical equations we concluded that hes better than those 10 guys. yes those equations can be wrong some times but most of the time theyre not.

my conclusion is that mma math works more often than not and everyone is using it without giving it any credit.

Thoughts?

Lol at just the thought of asking something math-related to sherdoggers.

Transitive property never works unless it's actual math

MMA Math isn't reliable as a system of specific prediction — would Fighter A beat Fighter B. For the sake of something as wide-ranging and subjective as comparisons of many people together, though, it's a convenient rule of thumb. But if it actually "worked" we'd never have people climbing up the rankings, would we?

This thread will hopefully blossom into something entertaining.

The rankings should be elo rating system based. That would be the fairest and most accurate.

Rankings aint based on MMA math. They depend on who the Ufc thinks will generate the most money or who they want to grant a ts. P4p rankings are more of a marketing ploy.

agreed but never said it works all the time. mma math/rankings work more often than not was my point. just like some ppl broke into top 15, more ppl have been there hanging on to their spots for literally years! changes in the top 15 are usually minimal. every year a guy or two break into the top 15.

MMA Math vs Rankings... >>>> The guys who will bring ratings to ESPN+

media members use their fanboyism and mma math is how the rankings are set.

Respectively, you're just looking at this the wrong way. Rankings are subjective ( for most part)and have to be based on something so of course mma math will be applied indirectly .That's why rankings change and often cause mma math is not relevant once 2 people enter cage. The fight must be fought.

Its 2 different platforms.

But a popular fighter that hasn't fought in years can come back and get a title shot.

MMA math is real.

- GSP beat Bisping
- Bisping beat Silva
GSP > Silva

- GSP beat Shields
- Shields beat Henderson
- Henderson beat Fedor
GSP > Fedor

- GSP beat Bisping
- Bisping beat Hamill
- Hamill beat Jones
GSP > Jones

theyre not two different platforms. but yes 2 ppl have to step in the cage which in most cases does not happen. ppl arent going to fight everyone below them or above them.

MMA math doesn't apply to undefeated fighters though

With rankings - at least someone thought through the entire top 15.

MMA Math on the other hand might be so dumb that you set up arbitrary rules to explain why one fighter is better than another - but the rules don't work for ranking an entire top 15.

A classic MMA Math argument would be "You can never justify putting X ahead of Y, cause Y beat him."
Imagine if that was the rule used for the top 15.
Court McGee would just have to join MW and he'd be ranked above Robert Whittaker.

MMA Math on the other hand might be so dumb that it only works when looking at a single fighter, and would break as soon as you start looking at multiple fighters.

A classic MMA Math argument would be "X should never be able to be ahead of Y in the rankings, when Y beat him?"
But that doesn't really work when implemented into a top 15 system.
its also the only thing implemented in a lot of other instances.
kevin lee went from unranked to ranked 7 after beating number 7 in the top 15. only 1 fight.
Al iaquinta went from 11 to 4 after beating rank 4. only 1 fight.
sometimes you win 1 fight vs a guy who is way more proven than you and u simply take his spot even though you dont deserve it. lets not act like that doesnt happen. sometimes you even become a champion by landing a lucky punch.

Fight matrix is the only ranking system that uses math. UFC rankings are a promotional tool aka "you are only as good as your last few fights".
