Movies Rate and Discuss the Last Movie You Saw v.16

For sure. All of those moments really stand out.

I really liked in that final season how Ronnie had a bigger role and seemed to be more confident and emboldened only to have the rug pulled out from him by Vic’s deal.

That show had some really dark moments. Goggins is another guy who is a really underrated actor. He played Shane perfectly and yet I’ve seen him excel in vastly different roles and a variety of genres.

Absolutely agree with all of that.

- Watched several times when i was young. US Marshalls is another great movie with Snipes and Tommy Lee Jones.

I watched Battletruck 1982. Never heard of that movie. Was a cool simple movie. As a brazilian i felt pretty served when the car used to face the truck, was the most realiable, powerful and greatest car in history, or beloved Fusca also know as Volkswagen Beetle.

The only part I disliked was in the opening when Charles Rayne/Bruce Payne was not restrained or strapped down in the medical surgery room. Other than that it is a really good action film, basically a grade "A" Wesley Snipes performance given the era.

One of the most perfect finales we could have hoped for.

The entire last season was an all time great ending to a series.
They perfectly deconstructed Vic and slowly made him give up every single thing that made him who he was. He may have been a scumbag but he valued the loyalty of his crew, his family, and doing the right thing for the vulnerable (as he defined them) as a cop. He had to sell it all out to save himself. First Shane. Then he lost his family. Then he betrayed Ronnie. Then he lost his ability to be on the street.

The pilot was also one of the best first episodes I have ever seen. We are thrown into something that we barely understand and then the ending to that episode. wow.

Je’vida (Finland, 2023) - 3.5/5

first movie filmed in the Skolt Sámi dialect that’s spoken by like ~300 people. beautiful b&w photography & a super solid entry in the cinematic canon of “sudden death of family member puts characters in a scenario that triggers repressed trauma”

Léolo (Canada, 1992) - 3.5/5

would you believe me if i told you that a guy jacking off on tomatoes isn’t the weirdest thing that happens in this movie?

Fallen Leaves (Finland, 2023) - 4/5

wow, people were kidding when they suggested that this ranks among one of Kaurismäki’s best. the humor & wit was so sharp & quick, yet delivered w/ Kaurismäki’s signature deadpan dryness.

Caged Heat (USA, 1974) - 3/5

raise your hand if you knew that Jonathan Demme’s directorial debut was a women in prison exploitation film distributed by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures? Demme’s career oftentimes doesn’t get the recognition it deserves for being so goddamn diverse. anyways, this was a lot of fun, def one of the better WiP movies i’ve seen, & it has a killer musical score composed by John Cale of The Velvet Underground

This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection (Lesotho/South Africa, 2019) - 4.5/5

an absolute stunner. the powerhouse lead performance from 79yo (at the time) South African actress, Mary Twala Mhlongo, & the intoxicating cinematography (i've included five extra screens in a spoiler tag below) creates a polyphony of aesthetics & feeling that lingers in your guts. This Is Not a Burial earns itself Certified Banger™ status.

Knox Goes Away (2023)

6/10

Michael Keaton plays an assassin struggling with rapid onset dementia trying to protect his estranged son.

A rare disappointment from Keaton, but he didn't have much to work with. He was good but everyone else was mediocre at best and the script was terrible. Staggering amount of pointless exposition.

Pearl (2022)

?/10 (5/10 personal rating)

Mia Goth in the prequel to X.

I'm not a horror fan and don't feel qualified to adequately rate this film. I watched this randomly when I saw it in my feed and found it had decent ratings, and I like Mia Goth.

Even as slasher films go this seemed pretty humdrum to me. Sociopath farm girl trapped by her circumstance kills some people after trying some pretty standard ways to improve her lot and failing. Story felt flat and uninspired, supporting cast was serviceable but forgettable.

Not sure why anyone would like this, but I don't really get the genre. I've enjoyed some works like Texas Chainsaw that really sold the twisted depravity that creates monsters.

Barbie (2023)
Didn't deliberately watch this - my niece was sleeping at my parents place same weekend as me, and watched it, so I had one eye on it while doing other stuff. One of the weirdest films I've seen in ages, genuinely didnt know what the fuck was happening most of the time. My niece clearly didnt get any of the dialogue, she's fucking 7. It's all about the colours, its definitely not a kids film. It 'looked' very impressive, I will admit that - but it was dogshit.

I liked it a good amount. Definitely thought it was better than X

The Boxer from Shantung (Hong Kong, 1972)

Shaw Brothers kung fu film directed by Chang Cheh and starring Chen Yuan-tai.

Ma (Chen Yuan-tai) is a small town hick trying to make his way in Shanghai. It is not going well as evidenced by the fact that he sleeps on the floor at the entrance of a flop house. He is not yet successful enough to afford a mat in the actual flop house.

Ma is an exceptional fighter who stands up for the vulnerable. One such encounter brings him to the attention of local gangster, Tan Si, and the two men develop a mutual respect.

Ma is pulled into the local criminal underworld, which is split between competing gangsters Tan Si and Boss Yang (the Yang crew stand out for carrying small hatchets in their sleeves as ready to go murder weapons).

Ma finds himself richer than he would ever have dreamed but faces the dual threats of Boss Yang and his own hubris. Will Ma continue to be a man of honour and stand up for the vulnerable? Or will he become just another mobster using force to become a parasite on society?

The film is over 2 hours long which feels out of place for a kung fu film but Cheh makes good use of the run time. Ma has a real character arc. The last showdown between Ma and the Yang Gang is a blood filled epic. It is at least 20 minutes of all out action with buckets of blood and intense action. In addition to the spectacle, the fight also tells a story about who Ma is and who he wants to be. Totally gripping.

Without doing any research, I am going to anoint this film for the all time best use of fancy cigarette holders as both character and plot device. If this film had won an Oscar, the cigarette holder would have been invited on stage.

Rating: Kung Fu Classic

I watched X despite slasher films not being my thing. I was fine for me but also more than enough of this genre. I have not watched Pearl, despite excellent critical reviews, and I doubt I ever will.

Like you, slashers just don't appeal to me very much.

Stagecoach 1939---9/10
For some reason I had never seen this famous Western. I had read that this was very important to the genre because the director Ford treated it with a seriousness and quality that previous Westerns did not have. Until then they were considered B movies. This film became the archetype for future Westerns and made them real cinema. This movie made John Wayne a star, as the typical lowly anti-hero type. It follows a group of very different people--An alcoholic Doctor (Uncle Billy from It's a Wonderful Life), A liquor salesmen, a gambler gentleman, a crooked banker, a prostitute, and an arrested outlaw, escorted via Stagecoach through dangerous Apache territory to the next town. The stagecoach driver and local Marshall lead the way. They all had different reasons and issues, and this movie explores social dynamics as well as gives us some action along the way. A great film, really incredible for 1939. I like to go back to the classics, before there were agendas driven by DEI type attitudes.

late night with the devil
8/10

really enjoyed this film. The buildup was great. Not particularly scary though and the final act didnt quite hit with me. But still great film with a unique look and feel as it is a 70's late night talk show. The creepy things happening throughout the film in the leadup to being introduced to satan was a fun ride. I really enjoyed the characters on the show especially the guy who is trying to debunk any supernatural elements and prove its all a hoax.

Dune 2
7.5/10
I read the books and saw other movie so no real surprises which hurt my enjoyment of it.
It looked really good and solid acting.
Just lacked that X factor I guess.

Came into thread looking for people's opinions on this, personally I thought it looked great but everything else sucked, pacing, script, plot, acting ...4/10

I will give you this from the people I saw it with.
SPIOILERS

One was like "I don't get it, made no sense how Paul ended up in that situation"
Someone else hated the pacing, the long pans and sweeps ended with a single wor dor two.

I do not agree with you but I see where you are coming from

The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Hong Kong, 1984)

Shaw Brothers kung fu movie directed by Lau Kar-leung and staring Gordon Liu, Kara Hui, and Alexander Fu.

General Yang and his 7 sons were betrayed by rival General Pun Mei and slaughtered. Only the 5th (Liu) and 6th (Fu) sons escape.

5th attempts to join a monastery run by kung fu monks but clashes with the monastery leaders because he is still filled with rage and the desire for revenge.

6th returns to their family home but is severely traumatized and prone to fits of rage and violence.

This is a Shaw Brother martial arts film and so we already know that it is going to build to a massive fight in the last act. This film delivers on the expected spectacle. The fighting is beautifully choreographed and intense. As you will guess from the title, the fighting style is focused on staffs.

The film critically examines the philosophy of the Buddhist warrior monks. The abbot rejects 5th Brother many times because he refuses to renounce killing. 5th Brother points out that the monastery is hypocritical. They refuse to kill the aggressive local wolves but they break their teeth, thereby consigning them to death all the same.

The plot feels disjointed because 6th brother disappears from the film in the 3rd act. The actor, Alexander Fu, was killed in a car accident while the film was being made. The movie had to be re-made as they went along.

Rating: This is a second tier Shaw kung fu flick but still delivers lots of action.

did anyone else catch the house that jack built?
I am watching it now and loving it, probably the best serial killer I have seen in a long time especially for recent movies
Matt dillion is amazing as an awkward ocd serial killer

I love the dark b leak atmosphere and some of these "incidents" as the film refers to them are absolutely brutal

I just saw the picnic scene that is going to stick with me for a while
