This guy runs a experiment with using sights vs. point-shooting. For him they were equally effective up until five yards. At that distance there started to be a speared, although both would have been highly effective. At seven yards is where some of the point-shooting rounds started venturing a little too far out of the optimal range.

I can take the sights off my pistols and still hit 8" plates at 10 yards without issue.
