I have to say I think you are way off here. Volk is pretty clearly the most well rounded fighter in the division right now, he doesn't have to be the best at any one thing, he will beat more people being very good at everything rather than great at one particular thing. Guys who are well rounded are much more difficult to game plan for, where as someone like Aldo is an open book, we havent seen anything that's new from him in a long time and he's even dropped a few of his weapons, leg kicks being the big one.
Volks going to be making big leaps because he's 6/7 fights into his UFC career, fighting tougher competition each time, he learns more from each of those fights, his coaches can make adjustments where they see issues, he's only 30 so just entering his prime, everything is really in his favour.
I love Max, I have said it already Max is my favourite fighter, him and Lawler. The truth is Max is excellent at what he does, but he only does that one thing. He for sure has skills everywhere, but nothing that is as good as his bread and butter - High output striking and his footwork that goes along with it. As a sole tool it's a great one to have, but it's just one tool. What else does he have? Is he stronger than Volk in the clinch? Aldo wasn't. He's not the better wrestler or grappler, the cardio level is the same, he hasn't got the power advantage. He has the height and probably slight reach advantage, but he does have those short arms so probably not by much.
The all rounder beats the specialist the majority of the time.
GSP is an all rounder, Jones is an all rounder... Damian Maia is a specialist, still very good, very dangerous, but, when the puzzle of a specialist gets worked out that is usually it for them, thus Maia gets wrestled fucked repeatedly by the top guys and will never be near the title again.
