Your unpopular opinions on music

Since this isn't a thread with the intention of just posting videos, it seems as though it is free to post in Mayberry.

I'm a drummer. Kind of. Haven't touched a kit in a number of years but played every day for a solid decade+.

When I first started playing, I was 12 and really really into Slipknot. For me and so many others, the drummer (Joey Jordison) was a God. It didn't take long for me to move on to more extreme and eventually progressive metal. Slipknot was a gateway band into heavier and more complex stuff, and I never looked back.

Today (about ten minutes ago or so), I was recommended a drum cover of a Slipknot song. The part of me that is 12-13 years old has fond memories of the drumming so I clicked it, ready to be wowed.

And I was sorely disappointed. The drumming was not complex and, what really blew my mind, was not very fast at all. I remember as a kid thinking it was so so so fast and complex how could I EVER play something like that on drums. But with that decade of experience and having been long into the extreme metal scene, it was all just very bland and kind of slow. Just mid-tempo double bass beats with the occasional slow blast beat.

Cliffs: Despite YouTube comments to the contrary, Joey Jordison of Slipknot is NOT a great drummer. At least not judging by his performances with a one-note nu-metal band.

What are some of your unpopular opinions as pertaining to music?
I'm new to drumming (see my thread in the music sub)

My music progression is probably odd, I'm in to everything. But I realize after sitting on a kit for a while, most of the death/thrash metal drummers arent as talented as I originally thought. Speed is not hard to learn (not as hard as having all your limbs playing different beats)

I've always respected musicians, but after actually sitting on a kit I have even more respect for the more technical/jazzy drummers, not just the guys that go really fast.

Big yikes.

Lars has a really negative impact on Metallica's sound, especially early on. Thrash calls for some high velocity contemporary drumming, but the dude mostly plays sped-up AC/DC style patterns. One of my biggest complaints about Metallica in any era of their music is how it always sounds like a child is recording drums for them. Listen to other thrash bands at the time, and it's hard to miss. It's not like they invented thrash. They knew where they needed to be and the drums just... sucked.
We had a new guy played guitar for us almost 18 yrs ago. Dude was a savage-quasi prodigy. We mostly played pre-black album metallica and I could still remember the first thing he said after our first rehearsal; that my drumming was more Lombardo than Ulrich. Best complement I ever received for my drumming. I'm not a quarter the drummer Lombardo is though.

Thrash drummers were more like a product of their time. They didn't went into the scene to be these finesse/technical musicians.

I don't know if this is an "unpopular opinion", as anyone I show this video of David singing this song almost die, but I do believe he has one of if not the best voices in music and INCREDIBLE range.

One of the best live performances I have ever seen TBH.

I still love them! I didnt mean to make it seem like I think they are any less talented. It's a skill all on it's own to be able to do what they do. I hope one day I'm able to even cover one of their songs. I just have a better ear/understanding now.

The Sickness was the lone nu-metal album in my friend's house/makeshift studio back in the early 2000's. Ergo, it's the only nu-metal band we listened to and in our bias and limited opinion was the best of their bunch.

- Pink Floyd is extremely boring, apart from a couple of songs
- The Beatles are the most overhyped band of all time
- Music has been in a constant decline since the 2000s

There are a lot of incredibly talented metal drummers out there, and a lot of those drummers come from a jazz background.

Most metal drummers rely solely on speed, though. And that's cool because it fits what they're playing.

I got a few.

Beatles and Tool suck.
Biggie and Tupac both sucked (with the exception of a few songs between both).
East coast rap > west coast rap (back in the late 80's to mid 90's).
Testament, not Anthrax, should be part of the Big 4.

You are not a good person!

I’ll one up you- Anthrax is better than Slayer and Megadeth

His drumming an St Anger is the worst performance on a high profile album ever

Damn. Shoulda dropped the sticks and walked away. That’s a serious compliment

Guns and Roses are the most overrated rock band.

I really love the energy of a tight snare-kick-snare-kick drum pattern in a thrash song. I do agree not a lot of them are "technical", but I couldn't care any less.

Death metal drummers are another story, though. A lot of them can come up with some seriously complex stuff.

For me Megadeth > Metallica
Exodus and Testament > Big 4 in the later years

I think Metallica has higher highs than megadeth in terms of quality. But when Metallica drops a turd, damn. So megadeth was more consistent. And as big of a dick as Mustaine could be, he didn’t sue Napster.

Anthrax’s last two albums were great. Metallica has two solid albums lately, they just f’ed up the mixing. Metallica weaves in melody better than the other big 4, although anthrax has caught on.

If you’re doing a purist thrash metal I’m not sure anthrax fits the bill, to be honest. So I’d probably dq then as more of a heavy metal band with moments of thrash.

For pure thrash I’d go

1 Metallica based on their early work
2 megadeth on pure repeat quality
3- and b. Exodus and testament. I change by the day which I prefer but probably testament if I had to etch it in stone. (Both highly under appreciated)
4 slayer

Actually. For a pure thrash I’m flipping metallica and megadeth. Metallica slipped out of thrash with the black album and only visits periodically on its later albums

So- you made me convince myself to agree with you
