This potential change seems dumb and unnecessary, which is consistent with pretty much all of his policies involving immigration. But I like @kenetics idea of rescinding it for everyone. it's not. its not a meaningful issue at all. Especially when you consider the constitutional issues to get it done.

This is red meat for the base who Trump wants them to believe he is the Saviour in Chief, who is going to end or slow down all forms of immigration (not just illegal) to end the browning of America. Just as his 'means test' of him wanting to ensure anyone who comes already has health care and has money is also targeted to slow or stop legal migration as almost all immigrants from poorer countries (mostly brown) will not pass that test but those from Norway would.

He is sending a very clear signal to the base that he is willing to go to battle against all forms of legal immigration to stem the brown tide.

Birthright tourism , for anyone not from Mexico and Central America, is a scheme that caters to wealthy individuals. To get an American visit visa, a Chinese or Indian or MidEasterner has to convince the US embassy they are not an overstaying risk. This means having a good job in their country , family, affluence etc..

There is no way the people who wrote the 14th amendment thought it was ok for affluent people from across the oceans to come here and immediately confer citizenship for their offspring. This law also mocks the people who apply for a green card and wait in line for many years. When these people from the Old World give birth here and return home with the child, they are not contributing to the tax base, but their offspring is eligible to receive Financial Aid and many other benefits set aside for Americans, when they turn 18 and come here.

Just deny citizenship to foreigners who are obvious birth tourists. Wouldn't be hard to look at their visas, country of residency and citizenship status and make a judgement.

I feel like that would be more of an inconvenience than worth it, but that would at least be a legal option to pursue and keep the scope of the proposal to the areas it was attempting to crack down on.

Maybe in your disordered head that's what you heard, but "the left" hasn't been saying 3rd world migration "isn't a thing", rather it was on a historic downward trend for nearly 20 years, and wasn't the invasion Trump envisioned when riding down an escalator, before he started issuing policies, like cutting off aid to key countries, and making the issue far worse.

That's what happens when your plans are foolish and short sighted: You get what you sought to avoid.

How many millions of Chinese alone go “citizenship shopping”? Add in India, Middle East etc.....

These people then take their babies back home, and they will use American citizenship for any freebies or safety net. Like an Insurance policy.

Maybe live their lives overseas then come retire here and want free medical care and retirement benefits.
