Official Women's Division Discussion #26

Feel kinda bad for Fairn and Dumont, they were willing to take Non title Featherweight fights, while the scared ones dropped down to Bantamweight as soon as possible. I hope neither of them gets cut, call in Pam Sorenson or make Letson and Chiasson move up, don't let these brave women go away.

Happy for Spencer and Anderson, they both delivered as they should have. This is what I mentioned months ago, that flashy finishes in these fights would spark interest in the division. Now there's interest in who will get the title shot against Amanda, and both ladies will probably sustain their popularity after tonight.
Dining can go back to her normal weight at bantamweight. Fairn can go to Bellator. She’s not UFC caliber at all.

Megan Anderson even got a $50k bonus, good for her.

I don't think either of these should be title eliminators but if you listened to the commentators the ufc clearly had an agenda for UFC 250 to rush one of them in there.

i hope they get rid of it after Nunes has defended her belt and start an atomweight division instead

I'm hopeful that the $50k bonus for Anderson is a consolation prize for not getting a title shot ahead of Spencer. Perish the thought.

As for the 145 division I think the UFC would be daft to just leave it to Bellator. It'll be seen as the baddest woman on the planet division and that's fine while Dana has Nunes, but imagine some future date where folk will say of the UFC 135 champ "ok she's good but she'd never beat X at Bellator."

My only caveat is that it should be 150 or even openweight, however I know how everyone likes to count in tens. I certainly don't see it as an either or choice with 105, sorry 107.

Yeah, that’ll never happen

Why would people dropping down to a division with better fighters be scared?

Yesterday's fights reminded me that good wrestling in WMMA is about as rare as good striking. Spencer and Dumont both had a full both had a full body lock on the opponents and struggled to get them down because of bad positioning. In both cases they clinched under the armpits and tried to drag their opponents to the ground from there, but that doesn't work very well since it doesn't control the hips and they're free to move around and do all kinds of things to defend against throws, trips, or other techniques.

If you have a body lock and the opponent hasn't overhooked it to keep it up high, you should drop it down to the waist/hips and tighten the grip to suck in the opponent's hips to take away their movement & defence options, and it also gives much better leverage to lift & slam them to the ground. This is what Suarez and Shevchenko do, as soon as they get a body lock they suck in their opponent's hips and get an easy throw or trip takedown.

Also, they should have a special rules fight where Amanda Nunes fights and demolishes everyone at 145 in a single night so they can close down the division. I put the over/under at 1.5 rounds.

One of the “talents” coming to the PFL lightweights this season:

Is anyone else irked that Invicta has a 135 title fight on the same night of their 135 tournament and it is not apart of the tournament at all?

At first I was, but seriously, look at the records of the fighters in the tournament, compared to the records of the two fighting for the title.

In normal fight related circumstances I would totally agree with you. However, I feel different about tournaments. Underdogs are what makes tournaments special. I mean probably the biggest tournament ever March Madness even uses the term Cinderella story for the teams that greatly exceed expectations.

Lets take a look at Kailin Curran. Her record was 4 - 6 and was 1 - 6 in last 7 fights at the start of the 1st Phoenix Rising tournament. By the time the tournament ended she was the second biggest story of the night and made it all the way to the finals. Stories like this can build hype behind fighters who might not be able to otherwise due to their lack of success previously. I wish Kailin would have capitalized on the hype she created but that is another story for another day.

I do admit having a 0 - 0 fighter in the tournament might be stretching things a little too far but It would make an amazing story if Taylor Guardado did well.

Nobody wants someone coming in with a 1-1 record and leaving the champion. At least in the first tournament, they were decent fighters, UFC veterans. This tournament is full of nobodies, looking to make a name for themselves. The two fighting for the title are established veterans by comparison.

You have convinced me. I think the underlying issue is the lack of promising 135 talent. It will be interesting to see who the 145 tournament fighters end up being. It could be worse than this.

Have they announced one?

They are eventually going to try and do it for every division. This was stated in an interview when the 1st tournament was announced. I would not be surprised if they have to skip 145 though.

I hope they skip 145.
