Green Bay Packers 2021 Offseason

Serious question, how many of the coaches, gms etc would lose their jobs prematurely if they got rid of Rodgers, who’s gotten them a lot over the years, and love misses the playoffs or can’t produce?
Gute would be gone, doubt LaFleur is given the can though. Murphy's seat would likely start getting hot.
That’s crazy. I think Rodgers is great, but I think he isn’t necessarily an easy player to manage. Sometimes the most talented guys are near impossible to work with because they know they can get away with it.

I’m sure in their minds they’d rather have this drag out, shine the light on Rodgers and make him be the one to make the choice. Then, they aren’t held as accountable if the team takes a hit as they would be otherwise. If your jobs on the line it’s worth the hassle

How many would lose their job if they make him the highest paid QB again, trade away Love and then Rodgers performs like the 2-3 years before 2020?

If this shit is true and they already offered him everything he wants except firing Gute, then he's as good as gone. They won't fire Gute and already conceded on all other points. I love him because of his play AND personality, you rarely find such interesting, thoughtful, intelligent and complex/complicated guys in sports. But what is going on now is also part of this personality.

Why would they force him to play? They should be stoked to trade him. The FO moved up and burned two picks for his replacement. So shouldn't they be excited he wants out?

Now they can play their guy at QB on a cheap rookie deal and load up with picks from the Rodgers trade.

This literally seems perfect if they believe in Love. It is why they took him.

They would be beyond excited to keep their cute, little 2022 plan for Love intact. Why they thought that this "here we want a little restructure for this season (that doesn't impact our plan too much)" stuff, or the general idea of having Rodgers as placeholder would work? I don't know, apparently Murphy and Gutekunst don't know Aaron at all.

I don't think he wants to, but he is someone bitter enough to sit out a year or retire for a year. When he shows that he is that serious about never playing for the Packers again, they will never get as much as now for him. He could also come back and mail it in, not like they can force him to play well or to give a shit, he already did what he wanted to help get rid of McCarthy (which was the right call, but still).

If I'm the team, I wouldn't try to force him to play. Either work it out with him or trade him, anything else would just be horrible for the team and whole franchise imo.

Of course the best thing to do would be to work it out with Aaron depending on what that entails. We haven't heard anything from Aaron, only some reporters "sources". This is normally a dead time of year for sports reporting from the end of the NFL draft until the NBA playoffs start so reporters need something to talk about to keep them relevant. If you've watched Rodgers on McAfee's show, he enjoys pranking reporters and I wouldn't put it past him to stir the pot here only to come out and say he is going to play.

Rodgers isn't going to "mail it in" if he plays. He has some of the greatest statistics in football and won't want to tarnish those. He's too competitive to give anything but his best effort if he plays. If he doesn't play his best, what happens to his endorsements? We saw him play with the chip on his shoulder last season.

It also isn't a matter of sitting out for a year. He's signed through 2023 so he owes the Packers 3 more seasons. If he sits out a year, he still owes them 3 more seasons. If he sits out 2 years he still owes them 3 more seasons.

You also have Tom Silverstein telling us that he has always been like that, leaking stuff through his "camp" and if anything comes out that he doesn't want to come out, expect that person to be gone. Of course that is extremely convenient, he can always come back later and tell us "I don't say it!"... He can just come out and say what is true and what isn't, pretty sure seeing a nearly crying LaFleur should have told the last prank believer what is going on. Everyone would love to hear from him, we will see when he speaks up, whenever that is.

He certainly didn't give his best when he wanted FatCarthy fired. He won't suck on purpose, but you aren't getting the best version of him if you force him to play. But I don't think it will come to this.

Thanks, we know his contract and the rules. You don't need to explain everything like we are 10 year old kids lol.

Watching McAfee now and AJ is saying there is no way that Rodgers would have let this get out there on draft day. The first report I heard was a reporter saying he heard from someone in the Packers organization that Rodgers didn't want to come back to the Packers. I suspect that Aaron would have kept this between himself and the team and it was somebody affiliated with the Packers that put it out there, possibly for money.

I suppose it's possible that Rodgers talked to his agent about it. Agents are pretty sleazy and not above doing something like that. They don't care which team the money comes from.

The other way it might have gotten out is if the Packers talked about trading him.

This is reminds me way too much of how Schefter got Luck burned at the stake. I get his job is to get info out there but the timing of it, not letting Luck tell the fans on his own terms and shit was trash.

I'm sure the Aaron Rodgers PR Show will provide honest reporting during all of this!

I get both sides. Aaron is being a bit of a drama queen here though. I understand he felt disrespected they drafted Love without talking to him. But look from the business side of things. Aaron hadn't had the best season in the world, they needed a plan for the future, they don't want to leak it to Rogers before making their pick.

If I'm a Packers fan I'm pretty upset I had 30+ years of Favre and Rogers and managed to get as many Super Bowls as the Ravens with Dilfer and Flacco. I know Rogers needs weapons and is 1 of the top 3-4 QBs in the game yet, but he can't constantly blame the front office for not getting him talent. Brady won with some pretty shitty receivers a few of those years.

Brady also had top 10 defenses in almost all of those runs. That's what has gotten lost here. Brady had multiple top 10 defenses. Rodgers meanwhile? He's had a top 10 D exactly what... twice?!

That's a great point.....which is why I get confused when people (not sure if he's ever said it directly but it's always implied) complain that the Packers use so many top draft picks on defense. They are a like "Rogers isn't going to be happy this year either b/c like 8 of the 9 picks were on defense". So does Rogers want them to draft defense or offense or what exactly does the guy want?

And yes, the Bucs D absolutely won that game this year. Sure it helps to have Brady's confidence and experience on the team but that D was amazing.

The histrionics about no offensive first round picks is such a good example of why sports journalism is so, so bad.

That shouldn't even be a topic. All the first round picks have been on defense because defense has been the problem year after year. Since the SB win, the defense has averaged being ranked like 19th in the league.

The bigger problem isn't that they keep drafting defense but that they aren't getting the results. Or weren't until this year. That's why I opposed reflexively firing Pettine. In Pettine's second year, 2019, the team was top ten in defensive points allowed for the first time since the Super Bowl. In Pettine's third year, 2020, the team was top ten in defensive yards allowed for the first time since the Super Bowl. And you fire him because of one fucking play? Where he was being aggressive and counted on his CB2 to not get burned by the other team's WR4?

I don't mind spending picks on defense but of the ones that TT and Gute have picked have they hit on?

Matthews for a time
AJ Hawk for a little bit though he left a lot to be desired in some places
Haha
Jaire
Clark

And... um.............. maybe Savage though that might be too early to tell.

The guys they've fucking MISSED on though?

Rollins
Randall
King (injury problems in college and injury problems at the pro level I'm fucking SHOCKED)
Perry
Blake Martinez never stopped guys AT the line or just a yard past it was always chase down tackled 20 yards down field
Montravius Adams
Josh Jackson

And that's just recently.

I outlined the pick fuck ups and failures in a post after this one but I also kind of get not renewing Pettine. He was at the end of his one year and was only kept so that LaFleur didn't have an entirely new staff in his first year.

Tbh, I don't agree with your list. Perry and Martinez were both great picks imo. And Rollins was a good one. Perry was a #28 pick who had a few good years and was a quality edge defender against the run. Martinez was a 4th round picks and was probably the best ILB the team has had in a decade. Rollins was really really good his rookie year, but injuries made his already problematic speed deadly.

Randall, Datone Jones, and Jackson are the biggest busts of that group imo: Randall because they played him out of position and Jackson because he just didn't have a translatable skillset. Datone was a legitimately head scratching pick, but it was also in an historically weak draft. Maybe my two least favorite draft picks of all time were Khyri Thornton and Richard Rodgers in 2014. Thornton was a pure project in an amazingly deep draft and Rodgers absolute ceiling was a painfully slow possession receiver who couldn't block.

Biggest issue is keeping McCarthy and Capers around so long.

Brady had an amazing coach too. With Andre too 5 defenses and ST play that was always on point and coached up. Has ST ever been a strength for GB?

The Bucs had incredibly good run D last year. So they had to throw. So the #1 WR got doubled and it would have been amazing to have a 1b receiver

I do wonder how different that game would have looked with Bahk playing.

Alright, my opinion is starting to sway on the matter. A lot of what's being reported is bullshit or straight up lies. I'm half expecting the next "report" to be that one of ARod's teammates watched him spit in Gutes coffee.

It's current -134 for Rodgers to return to Packers in 2021.

Given the cap situation, I think that's a pretty good value.

And there’s this in addition to Kuhn saying Rodgers told him he wants to stay.

Kuhn said this pretty much boils down to Rodgers wanting to stay in GB until he is 40. It's not even about the money. I really didn't think Rodgers wanted to up and leave and have to gain new chemistry with new players.

So what does Gute do with Love? Does he just sit? He'd have to be traded if they give Rodgers an extension.
