@Javelina doesnt this shit sound like something niko would say?
You take that shit backGood band back in the day
Terrible wrestler back then now and forever
Hmmm... I would say the water weakness was a mild detractor, though it was worked into the plot with the glass of water and stuff. I would say the movie as a whole just seemed to be overrated in almost all aspects. The whole thesis of the movie was that there were some sort of prophecies from minor things in their lives like what the mother had said...but it all just came together for no reason really. Okay, sure, M. Night had a reference to swinging the bat earlier and then at the end he had to swing the bat...but they are only connected for the contrived purpose of the story, rather than being otherwise meaningful. Anybody can kind of cram in an earlier reference to a later event in the script and call them connected...the trick is to have the connection be sensible or meaningful.
The acting was good, the tension was good. It was more that the events and foreshadowing that lead to the victory at the end were meaningless, rather than the water itself being a problem.
It was kind of like a deus ex machina masquerading as depth.
You take that shit back
Very well said.
For me, the water plot element was never even close to a deal breaker either. People ridicule it, but the fact is, you could explain that away pretty easily. Maybe they had no idea they were badly damaged by water upon arrival. Maybe by the point they realized it, they still had the hubris to think they could take the resources they wanted from earth before the weakness was widely known.
Regardless, you also make a great point about the "twist." Yes, the thesis certainly seems to involve the old adage that everything happens for a reason- there is meaning in things that appear to have no significance at all. The problem is that the wife's death doesn't really fit that notion, despite it being so integral to Gibson's arc. She basically foretells the confrontation with the aliens and provides the basis for Joaquin (and Breslin by extension) saving their lives. Yet it just did not feel organic. Oh, she had to die so she could have a vision of aliens and how Phoenix could defeat them??
Still, I think it is hands down one of his best films. Though the payoff of that theme does not really work out, I love that scene where Gibson and Phoenix talk about the two types of people- those who have faith and those that believe they are alone. Really solid work their from the actors and well written material from Night himself.
The movie gets a ton of mileage out of the performances, as Gibson, Phoenix, Breslin, Culkin kill it. Also, it's one of Shamalyan's technically best constructed films. Great tension building and execution overall. I'd go higher- probably 7.5 but also have it at the 3 spot for sure.

You would think when they were flying down and saw a planet with close to 80% water their reaction would have been
Ahh yeah he had two relatively unknown film director credits prior to that.Thought you said you never seen his first 2 films. I don't count the other crap he did prior to sixth sense
The more alarming thing was that one easily got locked up in Shyamalan's pantry with no recourse/capacity for escape...
But I'll be damned if we weren't all like this when Joaquin started swinging away
Which is horseshit cuz he was the best. He had to carry every single other wrestler during his performances. That's why his back hurt late in life.Nah the ultimate warrior

I'm rewatching it right now. Will respond to this after.Very well said.

Because he didn't win Hogan and BS both him and Andre.LoL his only good matches were against Savage and Rude who were both light-years better than him in the ring. He was a can crusher who only wrestled squash matches because he was so limited.
He was basically Goldberg before Goldberg but even Bill performed better in the ring
