Sherbytes: Industry News Megathread, v.1

Just watched the gamescom reveals from last night.

Super excited for:
- Lies of P
- Atlas Fallen

Hopeful but need to see more from:
- Phantom Hellcat
- Where Winds Meet
- The Lords of The Fallen reboot

Here makes sense, brother, with how short-lived back and forth is on modern gaming trade fairs; if you want to build out a marquee OP, I'd be open to otherwise. Maybe going forward I can also subtitle thread for a live, at-the-moment industry topic that everyone's interested in.

Well I’ll just lay out my thoughts here as they come to me in regards to Gamescon news, starting with souls-like The Lords of the Fallen aka Lords of the Fallen 2 which had an unveiling trailer:

Reading the YouTube comments people seem to be somewhat interested or excited about this but not me:

1. CGI trailer with no gameplay to show. That’s par the course these days but that never gets me excited.
2. Cringeworthy narration. Comments on the video have a lot of people going “cool, Joseph Quinn doing the narration!” No idea who the fuck that is, but his delivery sucks compared to your typical narration in a genuine Soulsborne game trailer from Fromsoftware.
3. Even more cringeworthy heavy metal music in the trailer, for a medieval setting souls-like. Good grief.
4. Lords of the Fallen fucking sucked, or as I call it “Clunk Souls” so not excited about a follow up.
5. Like @jojoRed i find myself to not be much of a fan of “Souls-likes” (meaning games like Dark Souls made by studios other than Fromsoftware) and only like the genuine Soulsborne games of Fromsoftware. I’m willing to give something like Nioh a shot because I loved the studio’s Ninja Gaiden games back in the day, but that’s the exception, not the rule.
6. It’s not even being made by the same studio as the first game. And you might say to me “But Worm, why is that a problem, you didn’t even like the first one?” which is true, BUT this is apparently this studio’s debut title, meaning they’re completely unproven and this could end up a total stinker. Also, according to some of our Sherbros (I think it was @GhostZ06 and maybe even yourself @Valhoven ) the Surge games were big improvements over the first Lords of the Fallen, so any lessons learned by the studio that improved upon the utterly lacklustre first Lords of the Fallen will not be able to be put to good use here.

So yeah, my hype for this game is about a 2/10. That being said, reading the comments it seems some people are excited, leaving me feeling like Principle Skinner

In the meantime, after having my heart utterly broken last week after there was no announcement at Quakecon of a potential Quake 2 remaster the games I want to hear the most about are the ones being published by 3D Realms, namely the retro “boomer shooters” of Wrath: Aeon of Ruin (awesome looking game using the Quake 1 engine), Graven (kind of a spiritual sequel to the old Hexen franchise which I loved) and the Aftershock expansion to the awesome Ion Fury.

3D Realms promised to show off all three a bit at Gamescon this year, and while both Wrath and Graven are in early access I am a filthy console pleb, so I haven’t been able to play either game but both were previously promised console releases so I’m eagerly awaiting more news.

It looks cool but these games need to start releasing. It feels like China has at least a dozen of these gorgeous action rpgs and we just wait and wait and wait. Looking forward to it if it does indeed release.

lol, I liked Lords of the Fallen. I don't know if you played through it, but there are only two weapons worth using, and it takes a bit to get them. The rest are slow AF. I loved the aesthetic and the chunky armours/graphics. I played it years after release though. I heard it was a buggy mess at launch. It was still a bit janky, and had limited enemy variety, but I had fun with it.

Deck 13 (Surge guys) made it, so you're right, there's a new/in house studio making it. They've put a lot of time into this, and there's a lot riding on it for them, so I'm excited to see what they do with it. Did they say they were using Unreal Engine 5? I absolutely detest CGI only trailers though.

Speaking of Deck 13 (Surge guys). They're making Atlas Fallen, another Souls-like also featured here. Another CGI borefest though.

One common thing about both games is it looks like they'll have coop. Lords of the Fallen confirmed that. I can't be excited for either until I see gameplay.

Games I'm excited for

-Lies of P looks pretty freaking awesome. They weren't afraid to show us gameplay/in game graphics. The world looks so good!

-Outlast Trials looks nice and twisted

-Homeworld 3, love those games, hope some of the og devs are on board.

- Calisto Protocol, can't wait!

-The Expanse. I hope they have some of the great Telltale writers for it. Drummer is a compelling character, and the world has so much potential for great stories.

-Warhammer Darktide, almost here!!

I'm glad you mentioned narration because that was one of the most mismatched if not worst voiceovers I've heard in a long time. I'd rather have Tito speaking into the mic over this guy; dude goes full George Costanza in parts.

Renaming the game from Lords of the Fallen 2 to The Lords of the Fallen and then the original now being Lords of the Fallen 2014 is just so unnecessarily nuanced. Later iterations of Lords of the Fallen 2014 brought the game up to something enjoyable, IMO, but it still feels copycat whereas the Surge series has its own thing (and is awesome as hell).

I'm lukewarm to cold on this at launch but will keep an eye on, admittedly, because I'm a genre whore. I like they're not releasing cross-gen, for some bonus points from me.

Related and on your last point, developer here is a subsidiary of pub CI Games, Hexworks? HexWorks? This sequel has survived some studio juggling, iirc; always a red flag but worse is that this was initially slated for release way back in 2017 if you can believe it. Germany's Deck13 is actually busy on another game called Atlas something but as I trust dev, I've already more faith in that project without even seeing a trailer.

They are doing the GOW thing in doing a soft reboot and using the original name , sequel effectively got shelved

Agreed. Jo unfortunately nailed this phenomenon, IMO, with how these guys are S-tier at delivering slices of games that look nothing like the final product if one ever even sees release. The only game of this historical period or mythological origo we keep seeing that you can bank on releasing is Wolong from Japan's Team Ninja. Korean and Chinese studios for many haven't much credit in the bank.

I didn’t finish it. I beat I think the first five bosses iirc, but I could be overestimating, it could have been as few as the first three before I quit. That’s why the game really stands out to me, it’s very uncharacteristic of me to not finish a game once I start it. At the time that was like the first game I had bailed out on in probably almost 20 years.

I wasn’t playing it at release, it was maybe one or two years post-release, I think it was roughly late 2016 or early 2017 that I was playing it, after it had gone on fairly steep sale on the PlayStation store, like $10 Canadian iirc.

Wow, so this is a soft reboot? WTF, man. Just build off Harkyn from the original, IMO. Despite its early response, the original actually sold better than many know (1M+, iirc), so why revisit that with an identical name over moving forward, rhetorically? I don't get it.

Yeah set 1000 years after the original

All the trailers at these events run together for me. Still really only looking forward to Callisto and Lies of P.

Denuvo by Irdeto is launching the first Nintendo Switch Emulation Protection

https://irdeto.com/news/denuvo-by-i...ys-first-nintendo-switch-emulator-protection/

AMSTERDAM, August 24, 2022 – Denuvo by Irdeto, the global leader in providing security solutions for video games on desktop, console, and mobile platforms, is pleased to unveil a revolutionary technology to protect games launching on Nintendo Switch from piracy. The announcement comes as the video gaming industry is gathered for this year's Gamescom, currently taking place in Cologne, Germany.

Nintendo consoles have long suffered from piracy issues and the Switch is no different. Even if a game is protected against piracy on its PC version, the released version on Switch can be emulated from day one and played on PC, therefore bypassing the strong protections offered on the PC version. This can happen with any of the numerous games available on Switch.

By preventing piracy on Switch while blocking unauthorized emulations on PC, studios are able to increase their revenue during the game launch window, which is the most important period in regard to monetization. The Nintendo Switch Emulator Protection will ensure that anyone wishing to play the game has to buy a legitimate copy.

As with all other Denuvo solutions, the technology integrates seamlessly into the build toolchain with no impact on the gaming experience. It then allows for the insertion of checks into the code, which blocks gameplay on emulators.

"We at Denuvo understand that piracy negatively affects the gaming industry and are working with the industry parties to ensure they have the latest protection technologies available for them. Our team is excited to provide a solution that helps the developers and publishers to help fight the issue of Nintendo Switch piracy," said Reinhard Blaukovitsch, Managing Director at Denuvo by Irdeto.

Even though it is hard to pinpoint the exact number of players who emulate Switch games on PC, it is easy to find online forums dedicated to emulation and piracy. The most popular groups have more than one million followers each. Recent research conducted by Irdeto in collaboration with Omdia found that 84% of game developers are continuously concerned about tampering and piracy. The study also found that 93% of those using anti-cheat and anti-tamper solutions are satisfied with the protection and value brought by game protection technologies.

Denuvo is at the forefront of game security with over 2 billion unique game installs protected across all platforms, and over 1,000 games secured. For more information on Denuvo and video game protection offering, please visit https://irdeto.com/denuvo/.

I caved on a few chinese action RPGs, as they had good trailers, screenshots, and some decent reviews on Steam. They were all ass.

One common thing I always found with the games I tried, was how floaty the combat feels.

Nice, looking forward to this too. These guys get better with every game. Hope they deliver here!

I'm looking forward to a few games but most are from the summer show, like Plucky Squire and such.

Though i'm looking forward to Tempest Rising (basically command and conquer) and Hollow Knight Silksong more than anything.

WTF is this shit?

A reboot of trash title.....What a waste of money.

Any title that shows just CGI instantly loses my interest, I need to see gameplay....
