International 'Cerberus' Heatwave Threatens to Break Records in Southern Europe

Gotta love how we've gone from naming Covid strains to naming heatwaves. Gotta keep that constant train of fear going. Oh no, not the Cerberus heatwave.

Bloody Italians!!

- I've read that a man died. But it's quite common people dying because the heat.

The Summer after Covid was a scorcher here in the UK, and there were people fainting left, right and centre.

I was at one of the first football (soccer) games of the season, and some old guy passed out right behind us.

Being old and British, he was naturally wearing what amounted to a coat.

Being alive post-Covid, I was assured it was definitely the vaccines, despite the fact that it clearly wasn't.

- A bodybuilder on a massive amount of diuretics died, and guys were blaming the covax.:D

The Cerberus heatwave is gripping Europe, with reports of tourists collapsing across the continent and a man dying in northern Italy. Temperatures could exceed the record 48.8C noted in Sicily in August 2021, with peaks expected today.

I can't even imagine 48.8 C

I know we all live in different parts of the world, but I think the highest I've ever experienced is about 38 C - with high humidity in Thailand.

High 30's is HOT.

High 40's?! No thanks.

Lol @ attributing Cerberus to Dante

Have you read some of Dante's work? It's great, Hell in particular.

Paradise Lost is also fantastic.

I don't think they're claiming Dante invented Cerberus or anything, just reads like a reference point - but yeah, a bit of an obscure one given it's an old Greek myth lol

It's funny how much variance there is in " comfortable " weather for people.

If we had a summer without going over 33 here we'd consider it a very pleasant summer.

Important to remember a big part of that is simply what the area is prepared for. Its like when a place in the south gets an inch of snow, and everyone in the north makes it a joke because thats no big deal to us. The 1 inch of snow isn't the issue, the issue is that the roads weren't built to deal with snow, there is no giant repository of salt for the roads, nor are there trucks to lay the salt down, no plows etc.

Same thing here. When a place that has never had this kind of heat before gets hit with it, the infrastructure isn't there to deal with it. Even if everyone ran out and bought an AC, that then puts a new strain on the grid that wasn't there before, and isn't designed to take.

According to people who track climate change seem to believe this may not be completely the result of climate change. Could be additional events such as ElNio could be a result of climate change. That being said ElNio used to hit once every 7 years we have had 3 in the last 7 years. Ether way heating of southern water is happening faster then previous worst cases researchers thought.

I have only read Inferno, but the other two on the list.

I’m assuming story is Italian in origin, hence the Dante reference. No way they’d give it to the Greeks lol

El Nino is definitely effecting it. It is still ramping up, so things are going to continue to get worse.

That said, its not like when El Nino dies down things are going back to normal. Extreme heat like this feeds into heating feedback loops, which just causes more heating. In a few years, this will be baseline.

Yes, the Italians have named this heatwave lol

Yeah, that's the one 'Inferno' and 'Hell' is the same one - quality stuff!

I'm not going to pretend I 'studied' it, I just read it, but it's so unlike anything else I loved it.

Probably helped that I read it on holiday lol
