They aren't scorched earthing anything, and I think using that loosely just muddies the waters when trying to understand the nuance of particular conflicts. Yes, Russia is so magnanimous, they just sometimes bomb hospitals in Mariupol and committ mass murders in some villages but overall they are all very friendly with Ukrainians.

I googled 500,000 rubles, and it's not a lot of money, even if that's half the payment.

Find it hard to believe that would be the motivation. I mean, sure some people are desperate and all, but that's basically a suicide mission or worse. Maybe promises of payouts to family if he got captured/killed or something. But still, doesn't feel like the motivation. Though little ever surprises me these days....
