bjj - what is the first submission you learned, and your favorite "go to" submission

1st: RNC. Which I still get quite often.
I don't really have a go to at the moment. RNCs are always in vogue, americana and guillottine are always cool too.
One that I've hitting a lot lately is the Ezechiel, which solved a recurrent problem for me. I am decent at scrambles and have a good positional game from the top. I'm however often quite lost when I reach the mount position. I don't really hit armbars apart with newbies. Some arm triangles here and there but that's also not too reliable. To that end, the Ezechiel has really come in handy multiple times lately.
One that I have tried multiple times but never really cleanly hit is the North/South.

My go-to submission would be either Waki Gatame or Kata Ha Jime.

I remember talk about how Gyi was a former soldier and had fought with the kukri, but that wasn't something I heard much about. Mostly we were just training kickboxing. I suppose he was telling those stories to "Black Belt" magazine.

I'm not sure which ones he told to the magazines. I was around him for a three day seminar and heard a LOT of bullshit. He played up the Asian martial arts master really well. He ALSO talked about training Bruce Lee-- total bullshit. Basically he made Gene LeBell's stories his own.

I remember one time he came and we did some forms with the kukri, and he reamed my instructor out because a bunch of us had rusty kukri's that we weren't taking care of. He told him that it was dishonorable. Ironic!

He's a pathetic old piece of shit as far as I'm concerned. But the worst part is the hypocrisy.

Was it good porn at least?

Sadly, no.

Whitebelt level porn bomb imho

I’ve seen better porn in bathroom stalls

Well, beyond the RNC and using my forearm to choke people, I guess there was the keylock. The Kimura was the first submission I ever did that made me feel sorta technical. You could say it is the first submission I ever loved. I always loved leglocks, but I couldn't really pull them off for a bit, though when they did click, they became my favorite. But the Kimura is up there. My favorite go-to submission is probably the Achilles/ankle lock, but the Kimura is great. I've bypassed chokes and Kimuras to try and win with leglocks, but if I went back to competing today, I don't think I'd do that.

I've learned to love Kimuras agian.

If I were to have my brain wiped & could only retain mastery of one submission, it would probably be the Kimura. You can hit it from literally anywhere, use it to go literally anywhere, it offers complete control of your opponent, and a finish if you want it. Works gi, nogi, MMA, & street. Kimura ftw

Yeah, I think it is a great first submission to learn. You can apply it from many positions, as you said, from which you can learn the ability to "see" submissions in different circumstances, it can teach you about using leverage, etc. and then of course, it chain be chained into other submission or positional attacks as well.

Guillotine. Rear naked is my fav though.
