Jones is past his prime. Beating him doesn't make someone better.

If Stipe or Pav or anybody beats Jones, it's a good victory but you're not beating a prime Jones circa 2011-2019. He's four years out of his prime. Those are facts. Win or lose at this point,
Jon Jones will go down as the GOAT.

Stipe is also past his prime, and beating him doesn’t mean a whole lot. Means more to beat Jones, just because we’ve never seen anyone do it cleanly before.

As far as being GOAT, if you don’t care about a career full of PED cheating—and some people don’t—then sure, have at it.

Great post, agreed 100%

Jones is the King of kings, the GOATS of GOATS. A legend. An Icon. A hero, A fearless warrior.
A true martial artist in and outside the cage
Respectful, humble and a true role model and ambassador of the sport.
An inspiration for million's around the world

Why the fuck are so many of you saying "past prime Jones" "old man Jones" after the Gane fight . I had doubts too and thought we'd see the Jones that couldn't take out one legged Santos but he's crushed those doubts. HW is a great division for a fighter late in their career . Hell it's practically the "old man division" funnily enough. You can be Jone's age and even a little older and be a primo HW.

It's a bit early to start preparing excuses for a potential loss, TS. There are no fights scheduled yet.

I bet any fighter would loooove to have a win over Jones, not matter how past his prime or diminished he might be.

Jones has a history of beating dudes smaller than him who were also past their prime. He arguably lost half the fights he was in where the guy was either his size or the same age.

Agreed. He's early into his "crafty vet" stage but he's firmly in it. Definitely not in his physical prime anymore.

As to whether it's impressive to beat Jones, depends who you are. Stipe and Jones are at similar stages in their career, so a victory for either is a good victory. Pavlovich steamrolling Jones wouldn't be impressive.

I also thought Jones' domination of Ganes was that much more impressive given he is past his prime.

Jones isn't in his prime, but he's still among the best heavyweights in the world, so it does mean something.

Granted, it also means the heavyweight division is still very shallow in comparison to pretty much every other division.

Stipe is also out of prime so it means a lot if someone of Jon's generation beats Jon. But it doesn't mean anything if a young fighter does that. Jon's prime ended in 2015 after first DC meeting.

The HW division has always been bad in MMA. That has always been the excuse against Fedor. The LHW division hasn't been good in a very long time.

Sounds like more built in excuses from Jones fans to protect his legacy.

Jones is only 35, which is a baby for the HW division.

The guy he wants to fight next is old and actually way past his prime Stipe (over 40).

Randy Couture dominated heavyweight until he was 105 years old
