Media Michael Chandler: Dustin Poirier should abandon title fight for a fourth match with McGregor

Should Dustin pass on title fight and wait for McGregor?

Champs do not get paid more. McGregor made more money in his last fight than the entire career of some champions. Dustin made enough for 10 championship fights.
Maybe you misunderstood me. I'm not claiming all champs get paid more than all other non-champs.

First of all, McGregor is something of an anomomaly.

But the gist of what I was saying was that Fighter A gets paid less than Champion Fighter A. Not a fighter A vs B comparison.

So, Dustin, as champ, in a fight with Conor, is going to command more scratch than Dustin, not wearing the strap, fighting Conor on that same date, same event, same everything else.

Do you actually dispute this?

I'd do it.

For $6 Million up front and zero stipulations. That's the first and final offer. If you can't bring the funds... Kick rocks.

I wouldn’t mind it. I will never pass up on watching McGregor get the shit beat out of him, it’s priceless every time. I just wonder what his excuse will be this time, he will probably just fall back on the injury excuse and say he never felt like his leg fully recovered.

The rubber-match was already unnecessary, so I hope fight 4 is out of the table

For money, he should fight Conor again.

For prestige, he should fight for the title.

I said the same thing but more towards Nate Diaz and other money fights. Fuck conor 4. Dustin knows damn well the media will shit all over his reign because of how the Khabib fight went. He’ll be a paper champ because the media is not ready to forget Khabib yet. Dustin is feathering his nest for retirement and he should be. It’s smart. He’s stacking money on his way out. He’s already mentioned retirement multiple times and I’m sure dana would prefer to avoid another retired champion.

He's got the 2 to 1 edge in contests, so he doesn't need to go chasing that fight. Conor will come to him. Conor is going to be on the shelf, healing, rebuilding strength in that wheel, then rebuilding confidence in it. That's going to be a long time, so why wait around?

Let's say he goes for it, falls short..... then he gets the championship fight payday plus the Conor payday. Anyone think his losing would take any shine of that rematch?

Let's say he goes for it and wins. Ignoring whether Conor would actually deserve a title shot, it's now a Conor fight PLUS a title fight. PPV numbers will be that much more through the roof. In addition, if you're Dustin, you now have two things Conor wants and doesn't have - the belt and the edge in their series history. He holds a much better bargaining position in terms of how much of the PPV slice he commands vs Conor. Not saying he gets the lion's share and Conor gets scraps, but rather he's not at as huge of a disparity and disadvantage that we usually see.

It would be insanely stupid to wait around for Conor to rehab and pass on the opportunity for the belt. Even if he's a money fighter, champs get paid more. Period.
Poirier makes more than Oliveira. Facts.

Eventually the hoipolloi will catch on and stop to support an organization that continually shits on its rankings by giving top 5 fights to a fighter that probably isn't even top 10
The UFC's rankings are a joke to begin with and just a promotional tool....

Well yeah the championship would add value to the match, but Chandler saying from the perspective that he wouldn't fight McGregor if he got the belt.

Chandler is begging for a Conor fight. Has been for a while.

Chindler is just hoping for another undeserved title shot but Dustin is in the way.

Someday his grandkids will ask: grandpa what happened at the end of your career?

Dustin will have one of two answers:
1. I beat the crap out of a crumbling hype job 3 times in a row.
2. I won the undisputed belt and became champ of the world in between getting rich off some crumbling hype job who I beat twice.

Dustin please pick the correct choice. Don’t be embarrassed to answer when the grandkids ask how your career ended 10 years from now.

He already did, thats why they fought a 3rd time... a 4th fight is not happening any time soon, he could fight and lose against Olivera and still fight Conor later on his (IF) eventual return, win or lose the title fight the 4th fight will be there.
You right.

Well yeah the championship would add value to the match, but Chandler saying from the perspective that he wouldn't fight McGregor if he got the belt.
Chandler has his own self-serving agenda to say that. Does anyone besides him, if he really thinks that, believe that Dana wouldn't jump at a chance to give Conor another title shot, under the excuse of the public supposedly clamoring for matchup #4 between those two?

Poirier makes more than Oliveira. Facts.
Olivera makes more as a champ than he would if he wasn't, and Dustin would command more as a champ than he would if he wasn't.

Because champs make more money. Period.

Or he could fight for the title, win title, defend against Conor. Profit

Conor will be out for a long time and when he returns he will need a tune up fight. UFC will give him an easy fight as a confidence booster.

Dustin would be waiting a long time.

I absolutely understand exactly why Chandler would even suggest this idiocy, but Sherdoggers whom voted yes to Poirier waiting to take that 4th red panty night in lieu of the Title Shot should be identified, humiliated and shamed for their insolence...

There's zero harm in fighting for the title now and Conor later. Even in a loss, Dustin still would get the Conor fight. Conor has like a solid year before he's even ready to start a camp most likely.

If Dustin won the title he could still defend once and still have the Conor fight on the table even if he lost the defense. Conor has zero leverage anymore. Dustin will call the shots till he retires. It'd be hard to justify Conor fighting Dustin if Dustin were champ but that hasn't stopped the UFC before.
