News New UFC Gloves

The issue was never that fighters needed the gloves to be easier to close into a fist. The whole effectiveness of the Pride gloves came from the resistance when trying to open the hand up. The gloves in their relaxed state forced your hand into making a fist (or atleast close to that).
I have no idea how you guys still don't understand after all these years that the entire point of the differences between UFC and Pride gloves is that the UFC wants open and minimalist gloves to allow for a balanced approach between striking and grappling, while the Pride and other curved gloves emphasize the striking at the expense of the grappling because that's what they're for.

The UFC isn't sitting around laughing at how many eyepokes there are or rejecting gloves cause they're being petty that Pride or Wittman made them instead. They just don't want a striking focused glove like those are.

I am confused. I thought these are the gloves designs?

Came to this thread expecting a pair of these bad boys to be on display as they make it very easy to close the hand into a fist.

I see the UFC went in a different direction though.

Doesn't seem to do anything about outstretched fingers

While most of us were looking for that answer, the MAJOR issue is that there is almost no way to create a glove that limits outstretched fingers that doesn’t in some way hamper the grappling aspect of the sport.

Even having longer finger tips like a mitten/ Pride glove style will lead to more glove grabbing, hand manipulation and possibly less KO’s due to extra finger padding.

They said the finger cut outs make it easier to close your fist up. According to their testing, they saw a reduction in eye pokes, but they can’t be too positive u til they really start using them.

Lol, the issue isn't that the fighters can't close their fists. It's that they don't.

Automatic 1 point DQ for an eye poke would solve the eyepoke issue permanently.

Would you change the 10-9 scoring with this as well so they have a chance to take the round in some way?

Every time someone says the Pride gloves were better I want to remind them that the Pride glove also covers your thumb like a finger.

Which is dumb as fuck for grappling. Which it's designed to be like that cause it's a striking focused gloves as Pride wanted KOs so made a glove to benefit that style over a more balanced glove like the UFC is trying for.

No. Eye pokes are a serious impediment and affect the rest of the fight. They aren't like groin shots where you accidentally aim wrong. 90% of the time they are intentional. Under the current system they are a freebie and there's no reason not to do it.

Start taking points and watch how quickly they stop happening.

Feel like gold color will be a disadvantage to wear. Much brighter color easier to spot for the eye than the black.

Then to boot the person wearing gold has to get accustomed to fighting in that color as well.

Historically speaking bright colours attached to weapons served a few main purposes:

- denote rank and privilege (as are being done here to indicate the champion)
- as distractions to contrast and draw the eye away from the real danger

They could end being quite the advantage if you're busy trying keep track of the new gold colour, which only the champion will be used to, and a headkick comes up instead.

There's also the rather interesting racial aspects with the change. The black gloves have always stood out more on the white fighters compared to the black fighters. Now that's reversed and they'll stand out on the black champions but not the white champions lol.

These are the exact same gloves with how usefully eyepokes are if they do fix it what is jones gonna do? They can't take our generations greatest mma athletes major weapon keeping a brother down is all this is

Gloves won't do shit about eyepokes because you need be able to open your hands and extend your fingers to grapple and wrestle, and extended fingers while standing = eye pokes

The change must come from the referees and a zero tolerance/automatic points deduction rule (accidental or not), and an automatic DQ if it keeps happening in a fight.

When serial eyepokers will start losing fights because of deducted points or DQ for repeated eyepokes, they'll stop putting their fingers in the other guy's face

They can design the gloves differently, though. In sparring gloves and most training gloves your hands are relaxed at all times until sometime after you throw a strike. Then you put on MMA gloves and suddenly that's an issue. Unless you have MMA gloves that curve your fingers a bit, or keep your fingers together, that is.

going around with your hands constantly flexed would be weird

Issue doesnt seem they cant make a fist, they love to have full stretched fingers, and seems even easier with this new design.

Doesn't look like any significant changes to reduce eye pokes and this is mostly about creating cosmetic branding differences between different levels under the UFC umbrella.
