Post Your Gloves/Gear

Hello all! Some very impressive gear here! I am completely new to the sport of boxing! I'm a total amateur, honestly just a fan of the Rocky movies, looking to get a good workout hitting a new 100lb heavy bag I just bought for my basement.

I bought a pair of Tuf-Wear bag gloves. They are ok, but honestly my knuckles start hurting after literally only 2 minutes of punching away at my heavy bag while wearing them, so I am looking for more heavily-padded gloves to protect my knuckles. I'm willing to spend up to $200 for a really nice pair.

I was mainly looking back and forth between Cleto Reyes Extra Padding Training Gloves and Cleto Reyes Traditional Training Gloves. I've read different things about each. What's the main difference between these two gloves? (I'm mainly looking for high-quality gloves and enough padding for me to punch my heavy bag really hard for more than 2 quick minutes!).

I was leaning to the Extra Padding Glove, since it clearly has "extra padding" - but one review said it's a "watered-down" Cleto Reyes glove (in which case I'd prefer the Traditional Training Gloves - but don't know how accurate that review was).

If it matters - I'm a super skinny/scrawny guy, 5'8" and about 155 to 160 lbs (so I'd probably go with a 16oz glove?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks so much,
~Tony

Hey there. Cleto Reyes make great gloves, but even their extra padding gloves aren't quite as protective as some other gloves you could buy for a lot less money. They are famously Punchers gloves - meaning they are hard and the feedback is great, but they don't protect your knuckles as well as a lot of other gloves. The extra padding is a compromise intended to rectify that, and it does to some extent, but some suggest that Reyes without he punchers gloves aspect aren't really Reyes.

If I was you, I'd go for a pair of Fairtex BGV9, which are Mexican Style but have more padding and protection than Reyes (and are half the price), while still being pretty high-quality, handmade and durable.

Also worth considering are Topboxer. Their Win1 gloves are amazing value and have really good, protective padding. Also excellent craftsmanship. You'll find lots of people on here rhapsodising about them.

Others will recommend other gloves, and most people on here know their stuff and are worth listening to. I'd also suggest you buy some decent hand wraps and learn how to wrap your hands properly - it makes a massive difference on the heavy bag.

Hand wraps are a must.

The fairtex is a good recommendation I had a pair of these in 14oz and they was great for bag and pads if your just doing bag 16 might be a better idea.

the winning knuckle guards are also good if you working on a really hard bag and you still find it hurting

Hi Nolandvd, and thanks so much for your response! It was extremely helpful. Got it, so it sounds like Cleto Reyes makes good gloves, but if I'm looking for knuckle protection, they're probably not where I want to go, correct?

I'm thinking of changing up my plan - Cleto gloves sound like a lot of fun (i.e. puncher's gloves!), so I'd still like to own a pair to occasionally use. But I think I might buy one of the more protective/padded gloves out there to use the majority of the time (a "pillow" glove would be fine with me - whatever is most protective!). The TopBoxer Win1 glove you mentioned sounds awesome, thanks for the recommendation!

I have been trying to do some research on this message board for other highly protective gloves - how does the TopBoxer Win1 compare to say the Ringside IMF gloves, Twins Special BGVL-3s, or Title Gel Training Gloves? What's the most protective? (I also read that the TopBoxer Old School Boxing Gloves are really nice, not sure if they're more or less protective than the Win1's though)

And thanks also for the advice about hand wraps! I just YouTubed how to wrap my hands - no idea if I'm doing it right! Haha. I'm going by this video: If anyone has a different video/method they'd recommend, I'd certainly appreciate it! (I'm using 120" Everlast hand wraps).

Thanks so much again Nolandvd, I really appreciate the help!!

RDL81 Thank you also very much for the response! I'll have to look into the Fairtex gloves as well. Ah, I did see a lot of people talking about the winning knuckle guards - I will definitely have to get a pair of those!

I'm seeing now that Winning probably makes the most protective gloves - but wow... $450, phew! Haha. For now, I'm trying to figure out what the most protective glove outside of Winning is (I'm seeing either TopBoxer, Ringside IMF, Twins Special or Title Gel)...

...and on top of that I think I'll pick up a pair of Cleto Reyes just for fun to use occasionally (either the Traditional Training Ones or the Extra Padding... probably the traditional though if I'm switching back and forth between the Cleto's and a more padded one?).

The only other thing I find confusing... do "bag gloves" really have more padding/protection than Training gloves? Some websites say they do... but I can't believe that's correct. I currently have a pair of 16oz Tuf-Wear bag gloves - they are killing my hands and I feel like they barely have any padding in the knuckles. I feel like Training Gloves would be bigger with more protection for your knuckles, right?

Thanks again for your help!!

The win1 from topboxer come highly recommended with good padding. I had the older model in 16oz that was softer and I didn’t really like using them on the bag but they have changed the padding a bit since. These are likely to be a good option for you at the price if you go for a stock colour.

winning or fly are a different level but you are going to have to pay for that and winning velco have terrible / non existent wrist protection so I wouldn’t ever get those

Awesome, thanks so much again for the advice!! I am probably going to go with a Topboxer Win1 glove then, and I'll save up for a Cleto Reyes Training Glove after that just for fun, haha.

I also purchased the Winning Knuckle Guard NG-2's. They look awesome!

I'm still a little confused though - do bag gloves have more knuckle padding than training gloves, or the other way around? (Different websites say conflicting things). Thanks so much again!!

Don't worry about things like that, RE: "training gloves", "bag gloves" -- if something is referred to as being a bag glove, it just means that the seller doesn't think they're suited for sparring

Why not try the knuckle guards with your existing gloves that might be enough and you might not want the win1. I have 14oz cleto trading gloves the padding is taking a lot to break in.

Ah, ok that makes sense - thank you very much for the input! I was getting confused, because some websites were saying that bag gloves have more padding than training gloves (since hitting a bag is hard on your hands), but other websites were saying the total opposite (that bag gloves have less padding so you can get better practice at making a fist and punching). Sounds like they're all incorrect though, haha. Thank you again!

Hey again! Turns out you were right!! I just tried the Winning NG-2's with my current gloves and they are AMAZING!! I can't even believe the difference. I was wailing on my heavy bag as hard as I could (which is not very hard, hahaha) for about 15 minutes, and my knuckles felt totally fine. I couldn't even believe it. So glad I picked them up. So my Tuf-Wear bag gloves might end up being enough.

I will probably still save up for a pair of Cleto's - how do you like your 14oz pair? I'm at a height and weight where I feel like I could do either 14oz or 16oz - I end up going with the 16oz gloves because it sounds like they have more padding, correct?

Thanks again, really appreciate your help!

14 oz is 16 oz

I like the 14oz they come in a couple of oz over in the Velcro the 16oz was too big I felt for bag and pads. That’s personal preference though really. They take While to break in too

Been a while since I posted here for whatever reason. Since my New Sporting saga shared with many of u last year I have just been lurking and using these 14oz Win1 gloves with LaceNLoop. Believe the hype on both counts!

For good measure, here are what have become my specialist double end bag gloves during the pandemic. A pair of BGV9s will go to the grave with me, I think.

Have you got a side-on pic? I sold mine because the thumb was at such a hard angle

What do you like about both pairs of gloves?
Hello mate!

BGV9s in 12oz fit my small hands perfectly and give my wrist amazing protection for some pop on the bag/pads. If I was allowed I would happily spar with them too lol. I like the watertight inner liner which doesn't allow sweat to even get through although it isn't that comfy. These also have the only velcro I can use with my girly wrists (notice where it inserts). Absolute tanks and value for money is second to none imo. Bit less comfort, but more soild with more pop for bagwork.

The Win1s were bought as general training gloves, which they fit the bill for nicely in 14oz. I'm about to order a green pair in 16oz for sparring (wishful thinking I know). They have been used for over a year and show almost no wear despite leather being so soft. They are very wide unfortunately, but apart from that nice as fuck for $100. The padding is probably just average medium density foam but inside the quality and comfort is very very good. A more luxurious option for light sparring and a bit of everything else.

I just got these through in 16oz. Haven't used them yet, but couldn't be more different to my 14oz ones without being different models. Is it the 2oz difference or has he overhauled the glove design, I wonder.
