Social President Trump To Eliminates All Federal Student Loan Debt For Permanently Disabled U.S Veterans

Clearing up red tape is nice, but it's not a new entitlement. This is maybe the easiest available cherrypick for praise tbh, but it's a good thing.

Why are people under the impression it's something Hitler wouldn't do? Nozzies promoted and implemented placing the interests of the country as a whole before those of municipalities, a reduction of class distinction in both a monetary and humanitarian sense, full employment, free education, massive public works programs, improved social services and family welfare, pro-environment legislation, emphasis on health and physical fitness, animal rights, etc.

Contrary to what many ppl think, this executive order isn't creating a new program. Student debt forgiveness (for permanently disabled vets) already existed but the program was bogged down by red tape and mismanagement.

Before, vets (the lucky few who were even informed of their eligibility) had to go through a lengthy application process to capitalize on this benefit.

Trump's order cuts out the middle man and makes debt forgiveness an automatic action with an opt-out clause for eligible vets.

That is correct.

It existed before in principle, with so many hoops to jump through that only an appalling one in five eligible vets actually getting it.

Trump administration to automatically forgive the student debt of permanently disabled veterans

President Trump holds a memorandum he signed Wednesday in Louisville that discharges the federal student loan debt of totally and permanently disabled veterans

President Trump moved Wednesday to grant veterans who are severely disabled automatic federal student loan forgiveness, rather than requiring them to fill out paperwork for a benefit provided by law.

“They have made a sacrifice that is so great,” Trump said in a speech to the AMVETS national convention in Louisville.

“It’s gone forever,” Trump said of the debt.

Veterans are eligible to have the government discharge their federal student loans if the Department of Veterans Affairs deems them totally and permanently disabled. Few have taken advantage of the discharge, in part because it has never been widely publicized.

The Education Department announced a partnership with VA in December 2016 to identify eligible veterans, who would then need to sign and return an application to complete the process. Work on the project, however, did not get underway until April 2018. The Education Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the delay.

Still, the effort has fallen short of its potential. A Freedom of Information Act request made by the advocacy group Veterans Education Success found that the Education Department contacted more than 42,000 disabled veterans, 25,000 of whom were in default on their student loans. Yet barely 8,500 had signed and returned the application for a discharge as of May 2018.

To date, the partnership between the Education Department and VA has resulted in the federal government providing more than $650 million in student loan relief to more than 22,000 eligible veterans.

The nonprofit Student Borrowers Protection Center said many veterans may have been reluctant because of the perceived tax implications of loan forgiveness. Until recently, the federal government treated money forgiven through a disability discharge as taxable income. The tax overhaul signed into law last year put an end to the government counting as taxable income student debt that is forgiven because of death or disability.

When the federal tax burden was lifted, consumer advocates and state attorneys general urged Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to automatically cancel the debts amassed by disabled veterans. The department said potential state and local tax liabilities tied to forgiveness remained a concern.

On Wednesday, the Education Department noted that veterans can opt out of the automatic discharge in the event they are worried about the state tax implications.

“Supporting and caring for those who have sacrificed much in service to our country is a priority for President Trump and the entire Administration,” DeVos said in a statement Wednesday. “We will continue to prioritize the needs of our nation’s veterans and provide them the help and support they have earned and deserve.”

Oh, yeah. Aside from the whole genocidal ideology thing, the downside is that all unions were abolished and nationalized into the sole DAF. It was harsh as shit, touted "for the greater good" and all but mandatory lest you found yourself escorted to a concentration camp with other undesirables.

I thought the previous administration officially stated all veterans since the US invasions of Afghanstan and Iraq have PTSD. Therefore, all vets are considered to have a disability (their term).

So, does this current executive order cover all vets since 2001?

Vets are scored and given a % disability. I think going through basic training automatically gives you like a 30%.

It sounds great, but he's a conman, so you always have to wonder about the reasoning, and be extremely wary.

It's insane I'm saying that about the leader of the free world.
It’s insane you found a way to bitch about this
Get off the internet for a while
Get laid or something

Hey at least the Nazis had one union worth a damn, right?

It's a damn good idea, but he has a history of not following through on these things. I think this would be disappointing to the people who he promises things to.

One can admit the good nature of an idea, while finding it specious to expect it's implementation, due to precedent. If you find this bitching, I'm sorry, for you are a bitch.

Change your pad

List of executive orders he’s written that he didn’t actually sign

That he didn't actually sign? Are you high? He does the shit on television each time, even when it's clearly just a plain sheet of paper, absent writing.....

Summary:

- We currently have about 25,000 veterans who are eligible for student loan debt forgiveness, with an average of $30,000 of student loan each.

- The debt-forgiveness program for disabled vets existed long before, but it was designed with so much bureaucratic red tapes to cut through that only 1 in 5 of our eligible vets actually ends up receiving it.

- With President Trump's new executive order, all federal student loan debts owed by any permanently disabled U.S veterans are now automatically cancelled by the Department of Education, unless they specifically request to opt out.

President Trump signs executive order to eliminate federal student loan debt for permanently disabled vets
By Savannah Behrmann and Chris Kenning, USA TODAY | Aug. 21, 2019

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday a new plan to relieve disabled veterans totally of federal student loan debt.

"The debt of disabled veterans will be entirely erased," Trump said during his prepared remarks at the American Veterans 75th National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. "In a few moments, I will sign a memorandum directing the Department of Education to eliminate every penny of federal student loan debt owed by American veterans who are completely and permanently disabled."

About half of the roughly 50,000 disabled veterans who are qualified to have their federal student loan debt forgiven have received the benefit because of an application process that has proven burdensome, the administration said.

The memo directs the government to develop an "expedited" process, which the Department of Education said would mean loans are forgiven unless veterans opt out.

Trump addressed a large crowd of veterans at the event, saying, "You fought courageously for your country, and now we’re fighting courageously for you."

He also vowed to eliminate "every penny" of an average of $30,000 in federal student loan debt for each of about 25,000 disabled veterans.

At the conclusion of his address, the president stayed on stage to sign the executive order in front of the crowd, flanked by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, among others.

“That's hundreds of millions of dollars in student debt held by our severely wounded warriors. It's gone forever,” Trump said.

Edit-- was congratulating him and now I find he might not actually do it?
