What happened to Rory Mcdonald?

Never the same after Lawler.

Looked alright in his fight with Lima,
As someone mentioned, somewhere along the line he probably lost his passion for it and was only in it for the money

Overrated a little unfair, unfulfilled potential is more like it
Mousasi is top of the food chain, fighting for decades, winning titles in multiple promotions

Yeah maybe that's it, people were making him out to be as good as Moose but he wasn't even close in terms of durability

He has all the talent in the world, but his head was never totally in the game. He struggled with motivation and this made him too inconsistent. Particularly later into his career, he always seemed to be second-doubting his desires to keep going.

At some point he was one of the most technical fighters in the UFC celebrated as the next canadian torch bearer to Georges St Pierre both trained at tristar, his fights were violent, defeating noteable names like Diaz, Penn, Maia, Woodley, Lima and was involved in undoubtedly one of the top 3 greatest UFC fights of all time with Robbie Lawler which he was paid just 59k, but soon after left the UFC joining bellator and it felt as though he was no longer on the map, soon forgotten and retired last year.

Couldn't believe he's only 33 years old..

How do you think he would matchup against recent welterweights champions and contenders since he left.

In retrospect, none of those wins aged well...

Lol, no all of those wins were great. Just cause they all eventually declined years later doesn't mean those wins all of a sudden aren't great.

That's like saying Fedor beating Cro Cop wasn't a great win cause Cro Cop isn't a top level HW in 2023.

2 words... Robbie Lawler.

That's what happened to Rory.

Crocop also didnt suddenly fall off the face of the earth 5 years later either

5 years is a long fucking time in MMA, and he kind of did for a while too. 2005 Cro Cop is a significantly better fighter than 2010 Cro Cop.

No he started fighting better competition than Dos Caras Jr.

Ok, I get it, you're a troll, explains why you have the pro fighter flair when you clearly aren't. Any fighter would know that 5 years can be the difference between someone being in their prime and being years passed their prime.

Lawler broke his face into pieces,
(and he was winning that fight)

never fully recovered from it.

That’s the answer right there. Robbie is probably my favourite fighter of all time but neither man was ever the same after their fights.

Lawler messed him up. He never fully recovered from that beat down. He had no business fighting gegard mousasi either

Too much too soon. Probably one of the most talented to not hold a UFC belt. Was winning till he lost in multiple big fights. Think his biggest weakness was he was really good at everything but not great at anything.
I agree. UFC scooped him up when he was a teenager, threw him to Condit for his 2nd fight (which, while he was on his way to win a decision, resulted in a hellacious stoppage beatdown), and the foundation was laid for him to be the fighter he became - well-rounded but at times frustratingly conservative, seemingly preferring to not get hurt instead of going for the kill.

What a fucking war it was.

The staredown between the 4 and 5 rd is probably my favorite thing ever

He never had good boxing or TDs... you need at least one to make it at the highest level.

Lawler took a piece of his soul home with him that night
