TUF Season 29 Episode 1 Watch Party 6/1 9 ET

Kem being the last pick surprised me. He might not have the demeanor that some of these other dudes have but he beat D1 standout Kyle Crutchmer in Bellator and went to war with Shamil Nikaev.

I guess he's really a WW so he might be a bit undersized but he's tough as shit and comes to bang.

Yeah plus they may have done some foreshadowing by including DW telling him Gastellum was once picked last. That's when I said to myself 'Think this dude will win at least his first fight. Otherwise the editors might not have included DW saying that.'

Hey ZC thanks. Let's please do this again next week & all season. It's fun with these PbPs & all the great comments.

There was a guy on the show who every time they cut to him looked crazy eyed. Longer black hair. Can't recall his name. He should be a piece of work. In a funny way.

The promos hinted at a house fight. Always goes as follows:

Dana: This is the most important thing of your life.

Guys: (fawning over DW and looking around) Yeah. I'm gonna be serious. Gotta get it done.

Coaches: Listen to us. We work hard. We've got good staff. Seize the opportunity.

Guys: Yeah. So pumped. Worked for years to get here. Got a girlfriend and two kids. Close to realizing my dreams. All work. No play.

Three weeks later. Guys drunk as fuck insulting each other destroying pool tables and throwing down on concrete a night before the match.
Yeah. This was actually a bit more popular then I expected. We will definitely do this for the season. I’ll probably leave this up for a few days then move it to the “so you wanna be a fighter” sub.

I think the next matchup has huge potential. It’s the prospect I was most hyped about fighting a guy who seems really excited to play spoiler. Should be fun.

Yeah you’re right. I can’t relate with that level of self destruction but it’s still entertaining to watch on TV

Yay! Thank you ZC.

Hey 3 pages isn't bad for 1 fight a little training and a buncha faces.

Yes, I just finished watching it on replay too. Great way to start the season via 1st round submission finish. Didn't get really amused in this 1st episode, but would still try to watch the rest of the season.

I just noticed that though Brian seems timid on the outside, as a teacher/coach he knows how to communicate. Nice to see a new side of him. Volk already has a demeanor of being the leader of his team. Hope his fighters can put up a win to take away the pressure and boost the team's spirit.

3 years away and they do absolutely nothing to revamp the show. It's the exact same fucking product that we got bored to death of years ago.

This was the first thing I noticed as well. Made the show feel very stale and boring. I may not make it through the whole season.

In regards to it growing stale , and perhaps needing a revamp. It is what it is. There’s only so much you can do with the premise. At least the production values improved significantly.

i grew up with Killa Kem and his family. hope he does well on this show. someone said he was the last pick?

Did they up the anti at all? You'd think they would at least double the win money by now. lol
It’s the typical “the winner will receive a contract”. At the end of the day these guys are here for exposure. Typically you’ll see 4-5 signings at the end of it all if it’s a deep season. But they could be offering the exact same thing. My guess is that it’s probably a competitive contract most guys would get offered after 1-2 wins in the ufc

Why was Matt Serra awarded a title shot when he won TUF?

What @Ares Black said. They’ve had a few like that. Like one season they brought in flyweight champions from 16 orgs, and the winner got a title shot against Demetrius Johnson.

What we’re watching on this season is as close to a “vanilla” format you can get. Two 8 man tournaments, the way the show was originally designed.

Where do they find these people you think? How are they selected?

Also if we have DWCS, do we really need this too?

Do we still have Looking for a Fight on Fight Pass?

Anyhow it's just UFC content - I prefer DWCS of the three but watched em all.

I don’t know how the specific casting went for this season, but in seasons past it usually looks like this.

They send out specific invites to guys of all weight classes asking if they’d take part. These are guys who are really high on “recruitment” boards. Champions in other orgs, NCAA champion wrestlers, guys who really would make people WANT to tune in.

When they get 2-3 of those guys in similar weight classes, they informally announce the weight classes and hold open casting calls. The casting call I saw looked like this.

500+ people in a building. Several large rooms with mats and gear lined up. The first round was basic rolling. Everyone pairs up, 50 or so pairs are going at once as evaluators walk the mats. If you tap someone Dana gives you $100. If you get tapped, you’re probably done. If they call your number, you’re done. They eliminated a lot of guys like that.

next was pad work. If you aren’t throwing basic punches correctly, you’re done. By the time this was over they had only 1 room of people and it was a relatively small group.

Then they did more rolling and drilling. Open sparring. They made notes as everyone completed multiple stations. Everyone in this process is allowed to complete the remaining except uses.

They call people they like to check availability and interest. They bring in guys who are available for interviews. They keep 1-2 guys as stand bys. They plan home town filming and prepare the selected fighters for the show.
