Well after years of litigation the Sackler family who are responsible for much of the opiod crisis just paid a fine and in turn immune from further lawsuits. No jail time. And they keep most of the money they got from selling the opiods. Yes 4.5 billion is a huge number but this family made far more and killed thousands by knowingly deceiving the country as to how addictive these drugs are.

Opioids have killed 600,000 Americans. The Sacklers just got off basically scot-free

Federal court grants Sackler family immunity from all future opioid lawsuits

Good thing most opioid victims aren’t a preferred pigment in this day and age…

Had opioids hit the urban, inner cities they whole family would get capital punishment

I've sort of followed this story since its been developing over the last few years. Really frustrating but the issue isn't with the specific case but rather how these are handled generally which your guardian link goes into a bit. At the very least this family should've been brutally fined if not jailed for what they did. And it wasn't just Purdue, I remember hearing that a lot of the pharmaceutical companies agreed to market opioids without references to specific brands so the opioid push came from the industry as a whole.

I can't believe taking opjids was bad for you. I never heard anyone say opium was addictive until this. I'm shocked.

You should review the court documents. The company sent sales reps with medical studies that claimed the pills these people were pushing were not habit forming and doctors believed them due to the medical research the company had paid to have published. Then people typically blue collar working class people who had no reason to not trust their doctor believed their doctor when told there was no drawback to taking these pills doe their bad back. Many of those people are now dead.

Been in the field since 2006. Knew opium was bad before then. Hell Wyatt earp left his drug addict wife in tombstone over it. There were wars over this before America existed. I'm bored with this

To make matters worse some doctors took advantage even after it was becoming clear that these opioids were really addictive and the country was facing an addiction crisis related to them. I remember hearing a story of a pharmacist who busted one of the pill doctors because she kept seeing opioid prescriptions signed by the same doctor for people who were clearly addicts.

Start voting for progressives that actually want to stop these things from happening. But we all know that’ll never happen. These folks are modern day robber barons and most of you scream to high heaven when progressives say these people should be taxed more.

This is where it gets sketchy. They marketed and pretended that their opioids were magically not addictive and had the medical industry back them. It was pretty egregious
I’m amazed at what they handed out. I had my wisdom teeth taken out and remember being prescribed like 20 Tylenol with codine. No one needs that for teeth being pulled. If I had taken them I probably would have gotten addicted

also people who can’t get anymore oxy turn to meth and heroine. All these ODs are a result of all this

After a few years of opioids being on the market everyone knew how bad they were. These people are scum but there also needs to blame put on doctors and others who are in the field and pushed opioids as well.

That’s common. My brother is a surgeon that deals with lots of people who are in pain. He said in his area one of the three docs nearby. One was a pill doctor and did as you said. Just wrote prescriptions for opioids all the time. And that was until recently

Reminds me of an article I read years ago in a parenting magazine. The article was along the lines of "Ten things your doctor doesn't want to tell you, written by a doctor." One of the tidbits was "Everyone knows that antibiotics do nothing for your child's earache. But, I still have a mortgage to pay."

And albuterol inhalers for the flu
