I'd guess his chance to try and be sucessful in the US would have been in the mid/late 60's but I think doing Le Samourai was a deliberate move against his old heartthrob image and he stayed doing mostly those kinds of films afterwards, probably a good choice as New Hollywood rarely seemed to be much interested in foreign actors.

Seriously Sherdoggers should watch Le Samourai and Le Circle Rouge, there pretty much the basis for the modern crime thriller with the former having been remade endlessly in the US.
