Multiplatform VR Megathread

One reason VR will never make it is because it makes a lot of people dizzy and sick after a couple minutes.

I have a quest, i never use it really. It's a pain to wear it for any period of time, a lot of the games that make the best use of it (e.g. flight sims) dont work well with the controllers.

I dont use it for much, every now and then i chuck it on and play something.

I would probably enjoy it more if my house wasn't a shit show of my wifes junk and i had an actual room i could walk around in. I have to play everything seated.

VR Porn is pretty great though. Just sayin.

The price going up on the Oculus 2 is an issue for growth, but I still use mine at least weekly (and I'm not a daily gamer).
The original price and lack of a dedicated setup for base stations, as well as the standalone capabilities, is what tipped me over. I bought 2 of the 256Gb versions.
It makes 3D modelling pretty damn simple. I'm not an artist by any means, but I can easily whip something up and 3D print it.
The immersion factor for casual games is also very high, with boomer shooter titles like Compound being incomparably better than their flat screen counterparts. Likewise the GTA V VR mod is the only way I'd still play the game, simply because of that immersion and scale.
I also use it for emulation, with my own nostalgic recreation of early 90s gaming in EmuVR.
There is a lack of dedicated AAA titles due to the low install base, and there's still a lot of short lived experiences that feel more like tech demos (including the only realistic emulation of the Virtual Boy), but VR mods and modes for existing AAA titles bring an awful lot to the table if you don't mind a bit of tinkering.
The base is still steadily growing, with over 3 million monthly connected headsets on Steam, so I don't see any reason to declare it "dead" (especially on the verge of release for the next generation headsets). The inconvenience might be similar to 3D TV, but the payoff in terms of experience really isn't comparable.

If you like Oculus Quest 2 "I own" you will love HP Reverb G2 especially now when they are selling it for 399.00 on Ebay. I just got mine and it is visually on par with the HTC Vive Pro 2 "I also own" the best part it is lighter by some margin then the Oculus and considerably lighter then the Vive Pro 2 that cost me 1100 dollar "Not including the knuckles bought them anyways" thought the knuckles controllers are unreal. Just started using the HP Reverb G2 and it is solid performer highly underrated. over 2100 by 2100 per eye and fantastic head tracking and control tracking. If you have the money it is well worth it for purely dedicated gaming because data compression on the Oculus and the limited FOV really is a downer. Good for remote gaming but for the best PC experience the G2 and the Vive Pro 2 are hard to beat.

Using my new HP Reverb 2 update headset what a huge leap over the Oculus Quest I used to use and now switched to the amazing "and smaller they I expected" VR headset. Lightweight, 115 degree FOV ability to switch completely easily between SteamVR environment and Microsoft mixed reality environment. Really great little headset.

Here it is on my old motion simulator and it's on the lower right with the light on it.

HP Reverb G2 info: Not really a pro tip but what chasing my tail for about an hour or two make sure you launch microsoft mixed reality from the start menu by typing it in ether for Windows 10 or Windows 11, check the connector on the headset make sure it is in fully. Mine clicked and looking fine but it was not make sure it is in solidly use a little more force because the little connector box light will not come on. Also if the box light is still out move the USB 3.0 male adapter around and if that does not work plug in the supplied usb adapter to USB type A and plug it in on one of the type A female plugs on the computer " I left the computer running during this to see the light turn on on the little HP Reverb controller box". The HP produced videos on Youtube don't mention these issues it took me about an hour of Google searching to find the right answer. Just a heads up other then that been having a blast with it. Microsoft mixed reality works wonders with Microsoft Cortana running through the Reverb microphone another game changer for me in VR. Not having to type but speak to it really eases the use of the headset I even said sherdog forum and it pulled it up first try the microphone icon comes up so it's not always active.

Update: I used electrical tape on the wire where the little cable routing clamp was located in the back of thee headset because it seems pretty weak so I rapped electrical tape around it.

Garbage hardware and games it is really just a cash grab targeting gullible nerds.

I work in highway construction and our tech guys are using augmented reality for mapping out utility lines and VR training for heavy vehicles, there's definitely good practical uses for it.
i saw some people using it at my office for some HR training. They had to interview an NPC and then later in the day they had to fire the NPC. it was pretty funny watching from the outside.

I'm unlikely to upgrade between major generational leaps. It hasn't actually been the tracking, resolution or FOV that really begged for improvement on the Quest 2 in my experience. Not even strictly in terms of hardware, where I'd be more interested in improvements in size, weight, battery life, eye tracking, improved IPD adjustment, general ergonomics and full colour pass through for AR.
Besides that I'd be very happy if there was a more open source, stand alone headset, as I really don't like closed ecosystems or "walled gardens".
That said, I'm still excited to see what Sony does with PSVR2 (especially in terms of price), despite never owning a console in my life. Just because the biggest barrier for VR at the moment is that small user base and the way that restricts content development. Sony and Facebook seem to be key to addressing that, although Facebook no longer seems as willing, or perhaps capable, to really cut that cost of entry.

I think on the Quest they're selling the hardware as cheap as they reasonably can and basically losing money on it so they're dependent on the closed online content store.

I always thought a cool VR game would be Spider-man, imagine swinging your arms to swing like Spidey himself.

The Ironman one was cool in concept as well

They certainly started that way, and that is the "console model" for hardware releases, but then they've raised the price $100 two years after release. That's unprecedented and makes their commitment and capabilities questionable. Then again they've also removed the need for a Facebook account, and I wouldn't criticise them for easing off on using the data mining and advertising model to fund VR development.

Is that the same Pimax 12k model they announced about 6 months ago but under a different name? Either way Im blown away about the specs.

105 degree FOV is not going to be as good as runored 120 degree FOV for the Quest Pro.

Issue is Primax though each release their software does get better.

I have zero interest in VR until it's basically something along the lines of Sword Art Online's VR machine. Like, actually transport my sense into another reality.
