great song, and pretty much defines a genre (or is responsible for its resurgence anyway). September by Mariya Takeuchi is great as well:

also from BIBI's new album, i've been listening to Ummm... Life a ton lately:

short, but sweet. it's got BIBI's fantastic chilled out, dreamy hip hop style, and fantastic lyrics. and there's an even shorter MV...

    new from Mamamoo:

one of their ballad releases, which isn't my favorite style but with their vocals there's not a lot to dislike about this. the simple but emotional instrumentals highlight the power of the group's vocals really well. i think Moonbyul's rapping can sometimes fall into the kpop trap of feeling unconnected from the rest of the song, but in releases like this where she's able to add more melody instead of just going for "girl crush" rapping it fits perfectly. frankly, i think she's underutilized but that's also nothing new.

i think this song will also really thrive in live stages like...

    Twice comeback:

surprised to see Twice go with a bossa nova beat for the instrumentals here, but it fits the summer vibe they're going for. it's not my favorite Twice track, but as always they show how consistently good their releases are and this is still a really good, fun summer song. as always the chorus is fantastic and catchy, and i also like the fun choreo, and love the hook they gave to Sana and Momo and that they gave Momo the lyrics with "sweet mimosa" as a nod to the J-Line.

LOONA comeback with PTT (Paint The Town):

firstly, it's good to see Haseul back.

aside from that, this release is a bit frustrating to me. i'm down for the indian-inspired beat the track starts off with, but Heejin and Choerry coming in with more upbeat vocals feels out of place and like some kind of early Red Velvet release. but then the track finds its legs a bit with Lip and Yves and a decent pre-chorus before pretty much falling apart for me again with the chorus. i'm generally not a fan of this trend of vocalizations or whatever it's called mostly coming from BlackPink's Ddu Ddu Ddu, but also found (done more successfully imo) in Everglow's Dun Dun and La Ti Ta. this is nothing new, but you'd also never know Gowon and Vivi are in this group. ultimately, while there are some good spots in the song, it just feels like a dime-a-dozen girl crush track and makes me feel wistful for their amazing pre-debut releases.

on a more positive note, this comeback from a week or so ago from Pink Fantasy with Poison:

comparisons to Dreamcatcher are obvious, with the music box and robes to start off, rock sound, and a couple bits of choreography. they go a bit further with the screamo screaming, but also include a more palatable high-energy chorus, and for me it all works really well.

    comeback from my girls Dreamcatcher:

they can do no wrong for me, and i love it. the chorus is great, and as always the pre-chorus build up is fantastic. i feel like unlike most of their other singles, the first refrain of the chorus pulls some of the energy back after the pre-chorus build and then the second refrain brings in their rock elements. again i feel like the weak part of the song is Dami's rap break over The Prodigy-style drum n bass which doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of the song to me (and isn't really a style of music i like), but her rap break in Odd Eye grew on me so maybe this will too.

and the visuals are unparalleled, imo.

yup, Somi is definitely kpop. i feel like she's struggled to find her own voice/style and i think being with YG hasn't helped too much and this sounds like it could just as easily have been from Blackpink.

    comeback from SUNMI:

she's sticking with the retro synthpoppy sound which is great, and the concept for the MV is excellent. IMO it's one of her weaker singles though, and it feels a bit repetitive. it also falls into that same old trap of having a disconnected rap breakdown that doesn't fit and really doesn't feel like Sunmi's style.

    comeback from Weeekly:

it was always going to be hard to follow a great song like After School which is still one of the best of the year for me, and while this one doesn't reach that level it's still quite good imo. the instrumentals are a bit simplistic and could have used a bit more complexity, but i think the simple beat works well.

and most importantly, a reunion of one of the greatest groups of all time, CIVA:
