How does the fight go?

How does a guy who has never been in a professional boxing ring hold his own and arguably win against someone who is a master at the science behind the sport? I don't understand.

Fury clearly didn’t prepare and thought he would go in there and clown him. Ngannou wasn’t scared of Fury at all and whilst he’s a boxing novice he knows how to fight. Saying that he really didn’t do much outside of the knockdown and a few flurries.

A hideous off night for Fury which may or may not be the beginning of the end.

I agree but he looked even worse, very loose, like there was no muscle under there. When he fought Wilder, he may not have been an Adonis, but you could see there was muscle mass there. He looked a lot more sturdy.
I think he beat guys like Whyte and Chisora while half assing it and thought he could just get away with that. I don'tbelieve for a second Fury had a real , proper 12 week training camp. I think he believed he was just that good.

Fury fighting Wilder got knocked down how many times? Wilder is a terrible boxer - he just power punches. Francis showed better boxing ability in this fight than Wilder ever has. Wilder is also 40-50lbs lighter than Francis. The fights really aren't comparable.

You gotta stop making excuses. The heavyweight champ arguably lost to a guy in his first ever boxing match. That doesn't just happen due to lack of prep or being lazy. It's because the skill gap is a lot less than you thought.

What surprised me was just how damn good Francis's gameplan was and how disciplined he was in following it. Holding his ground, not chasing, forcing Fury to overextend to land his right and countering with the left hook.

What was Fury supposed to do? He couldn't clinch with him, too strong and too dangerous--and Francis wasn't falling for his feints or getting baited in when Fury was on the outside. All Fury could do is flick his jab.

It may have not been the best way for Francis to guarantee a win, but for a guy in his position it was a great choice.

It shouldn’t really be about this or that guy , a good fight is a good fight no matter what sport it is , even kick boxing is worth a watch now and then I’ve seen some crazy brutal fights . Todays fans are more interested in popularity fighters not good fights ,they don’t know how spoiled they are even though they have an entire set of choices more then ever .

Combat sports are much bigger now with social media , back in the day guys like me had to watch Tuesday Night Fights which was on USA network once a week and taped things on a VHS if I was lucky to get a big fight on T.V once in a blue moon , even UFC wasn’t around you actually saw kickboxing and that was our MMA . Lol

that was me in my 20s. I still have Hearns/Hagler on VHS. I used to absolutely love boxing…boxing was starting to slip a bit, post Tyson, but went off the rails from like 05 on. Just too many belts, chaos, and big fights not being made. Or being made timely. The 80s was the last great decade for boxing. Started to get a little better matchups the last 5 years.

He was the puppet of the Great Dana for years
That acting like african guerilla general against Stipe was all the Immortal Dana's plan
''Don't lie Stipe don't lie''
Just one year. Dana threw him under the bus after he failed in the first Stipe fight and much worse after BB. UFC then started to match him up against unfavorable matches at the time by giving him the two best grapplers. It wasn't till he Koed JDS and Roz that he's back in the spotlight.

In a 10 or 12 round fight with 3 or more swing rounds, there's nearly no such thing as a robbery.

If all the swing rounds go 1 way it's Fury 7-3, if they all go to Francis it's 6-4 Francis. And obviously everything in between is plausible as well.

Robbery is the new racism/fascism/insert-a-term that's constantly misused by the masses.

If a judge is scoring "swing rounds" anything other than 10-10 they're doing it wrong.

Sadly, almost all judges do it wrong--how else would they give an advantage to the house fighter.

Wilder is an Olympic medalist and held and defended the WBC championship 10 times. Ngannou landed a good punch on Fury.
Lets cool it with the Ngannou hyperbole.

No one cares about fake fights. "No it's real, Inoki has to scoot on his ass all day because of strategy"
I had Francis up by 2 at the final bell, and I'm a Fury fan and a much bigger boxing fan than MMA.

Fury only really had 2-3 rounds where I thought he clearly won, there were a couple "nothing happened rounds" that I scored 10-10 (as one should).

If one gives EVERY close round to Fury, than the decision makes sense.. and that's what I suspect happened in the judging. This is typically how fights are "fixed," and why promoters are so against 10-10 rounds.
the ref was bought and paid for in that fight. Tyson landed a clean flush elbow to Ngannou's face. With the point deduction, Ngannou would've won on two of the judge's cards. Ngannou should've hired Hopkins to learn how to work the refs better.

Tyson would have a bright career in mma if his double leg attempt had better drive, even ngannou sprawled him out. His panic clinching attempts were on point all night.

Perhaps Fury didn't take him seriously. For a guy who supposedly had a 12 week training camp, he looks soft and mushy. He looked like a regular out of shape person from the audience, as opposed to a high level athlete expecting an easy night.
He looked about 60 pounds overweight as opposed to his usual 30. I think he saw this as an easy way to rob the bank, and received a nasty reality check when Francis showed up much more polished, and physically strong than he expected.

-Boxing is a big part of MMA.
-Francis has actually been training boxing since before he ever did MMA. So he is no novice.
-He is also used to big fight competition so there was no pressure on him like if it was his first fight.
-His MMA training and size made him superior in the clinch to Fury, and he damaged him there taking away Furys goto to wear guys out.
-His power made Fury wary once he dropped him.
-Then add that Fury had an off night and underestimated him.
-Francis has hundreds of hours of footage on Fury, Fury had none on him in a boxing ring.
-Put all these things together and it's not so incomprehensible.

That has to be the hardest punch ever landed on a human.
In hindsight, I was one of the ones that thought Francis would be embarrassed and have this be the end of his boxing ambitions, so in hindsight it was a very good idea on his part. Well done Big Frank, give em hell.

At HW, size/strength is a much bigger factor than in other divisions. I mean you can have 2 guys fighting each other than are 100 lbs apart, like in Haye vs Valuev.

So yeah, a super strong athletic dude with less boxing experience can certainly hold his own vs a more skilled, but physically weaker guy.

I agree it's only possible at HW though.
