Was Randy Couture right?

He was right but not for his own reasoning. There are way less mismatches in the UFC now, which means less finishes due to incompetence

I'm late to this and I will get a lot of hate for saying this, I have to disagree with Randy on this. Yes the fighters are getting more well rounded,. But it has to do with how the judging is done. It seems as of the unified rules of MMA and with the commissions that support it still seem to favor Wrestling and the 10 Point must system. Which really put submission specialists and guard players at a real disadvantage .

However I feel as what people were saying here MMA will go though phases.

IMHO, as a lifelong grappler in folk wrestling and BJJ, it’s far too easy to slow down sub attempts.
You can snuff takedowns or simply defend because you can see sub attempts from a mile away. After a little training, you know not to give up ur neck, arm, heel etc... Those who do, are either rocked, exhausted or new to fighting, so they forget they’re dropping their defense.

Striking and wrestling is solid since it’s harder to see it coming, it’s explosive by nature. BJJ has too many steps that must go right in order to get a sub on and moreover, to get them to tap.

That's why the guys that do best with it are often weaving striking and grappling back and forth.

When you rain down blows from top half guard it's much easier to pass, etc.

Subs are much easier to land when you're mauling a guy from the top than if you try to play pure top grappling vs a guard player who wants to elbow you in the crown or standup.

True, my thing is, if you’re in a position to strike without really being vulnerable, you’re in a position to win anyway, without a sub attempt, going for a sub is risky as you will lose position on many occasions. That said, every once in a while, you can slap, elbow, punch and catch a quick sub once they react, but this is rare for top 10 ranked fighters who know they’re being set up.
