When Merab tried to takedown a 35 yr old Aldo

Aldo fought much weaker competition back then. You don’t think Volk or Max could beat the same guys Aldo beat? Volk and max would have the same streak and title defense record. Beating Hominick, Lamas and guys like Mike Brown lol. The competition matters when you mention streaks and wins. Max and Volk fought much superior competition and even beat Aldo easily

Aldo lost to Max, Volk and Conor who are considered the greatest featherweights ever.

Today's fighters are definitely better but for their time ... Aldo > Volk.

All time accomplishments ... Aldo > Volk.

It just depends on how u view things.

No way. Volk fought better competition and beat Max 3 times. Then he literally beat Aldo, Aldo has lost to Max, Volk and Conor.

Volk and max would wipe the floor with Aldo’s competition and would have done the same thing as Aldo

so if merab becomes champs is this gonna be like another "michael johnson wobbled khabib" moment ?

By this logic, the newest champ with 1 or 2 defenses will always be the GOAT "because better competition, bro." But it's a fallacy. Faber and Brown were legimate competition at the time, as were Swanson, Edgar, Mendes, Lamas, a younger KZ, Florian, etc. Aldo fought a wide variety of grapplers, strikers and hybrid wrestle-boxers. It's worth noting that Swanson and Lamas (lol?) beat future LW champ Oliveira and KZ beat Poirier.

Compare that to an alleged GOAT like Khabib who didn't even break the LW title defense record (he's tied with BJ, Bendo and Edgar) and faced nothing but strikers in his title defenses.

The competition matters more than win streaks or title defenses. Aldo was dominant when featherweight was weak and only had Mendes and Frankie. The UFC wasn’t as evolved back then let’s be honest. Aldo is a great fighter but he wouldn’t be as successful in featherweight today and wouldn’t have won against Volks competition. Not to mention Volk and Max are more skilled and would beat any version of Aldo.

Same with BJ Penn, he would get murdered in today’s division. People are just nostalgic and are biased

Again, your totally missing the point. The GOAT is a champ who was the best relative to competition in his era. You have to look at the number of title defenses, the variety of fighters they fought with stylistic differences, etc. Otherwise, it's a moot point and stupid conversation. The GOAT is just the current champ like 75% of the time.

No it goes by how weak or strong the division is and the competition which it’s much stronger today.

With the exception of being gassed against Hominick, Aldo had GOAT level TDD. I would say up there with prime BJ and GSP in terms of fighters that never started from a wrestling base.

Curious, when is the acceptable age for you to consider somebody past their prime?

And do all fighters decline at this same number?
Aldo was only like 30 years old and had looked amazing against Edgar in the rematch then went on a bantamweight title run. Comparing that to an 50 year old Chuck losing to Tito is hilarious.

I felt that was Aldo's fight but the wall n stall bs worked on the judges.
Defensive td defense should be counted as winning exchanges.

Aldo had 30 pro fights at this time, and If you were unable to see see that he was slower, stiffer, less explosive, and unable to spam his elite leg kicks frequently anymore, than you likely never watched Aldo before getting KOd by Conor. And his fight against Edgar was 1 year prior to fighting Holloway, and 1.5 year before Edgar was murked by Ortega.

It's even more hilarious you couldn't pick up the hyperbole.

Oh so he was only last prime when he lost. How convenient. I agree fight mileage is a thing but he was barely 30 years old when he started losing and still looked damn good.

He still looked good, but wasn't even close to what he used to be in his prime.

Volk and Aldo were both clearly out of their primes when they lost the belt.
