When Merab tried to takedown a 35 yr old Aldo

Aldo is the FW king for now. Imagine if Topuria could beat him though. Ten more straight wins. And if they were all title defenses he could do it! What an excellent time to be a fan.

So 3 of his wins, 2 of which volk also has, theoretically still being elite today, means that guys like hominick, Florian, brown, gamburyan, are worth the same as yair, ortega, aldo, tkz?
You don’t think guys like Mike Brown or Ken Flo couldn’t beat guys like Yair & Ortega? Seriously???

Merab was unsuccessful in all 16 td attempts vs a 35 year old Jose Aldo. Though he didn’t score any tds, Merab still won this fight by decision. Jose still a goat though. This fight was in the summer of 2022

Aldo won this fight. 2nd greatest ufc fighter ever behind Anderson (oh yeah DJ exists, okay 3rd).

It's crazy to think Olympic Gold medalist Henry wasn't able to stuff the td's as great as Aldo.

lmao i get it todays connor is a clown

have u seen prime conor?
you cant be a superstar if you cant back up your claims
like conor did
Conor only had 3 wins in the UFC when it mattered-high stakes against prime competition. And 2 of those, he most likely would have lost in a rematch.

Volk beat max, yair and Ortega and suddenly people claiming he's got all the names under his belt. Any of the other names were shells of themselves

Aldo fought much weaker competition back then. You don’t think Volk or Max could beat the same guys Aldo beat? Volk and max would have the same streak and title defense record. Beating Hominick, Lamas and guys like Mike Brown lol. The competition matters when you mention streaks and wins. Max and Volk fought much superior competition and even beat Aldo easily

Aldo lost to Max, Volk and Conor who are considered the greatest featherweights ever.

You really expose yourself when you include Conor among the greatest featherweights ever.

The guy who never once defended the FW title

I agree, altho for what it's worth no FW has ever moved up to LW and won the title... besides Conor

UFC 179 Mendes would be Champion in todays 145 Division. I love Holloway and Volk, but the only times Volk was in Danger besides Topuria, were Islam (ofc) and Mendes. Mind you, Mendes was a Shell of his Former Self when he fought Volk and still managed to take Volk down, as well as hurt him badly.

A Prime, Focused Chad Mendes would be a Problem for Todays Featherweights. For anyone to dispute this is ABSURD, go rewatch Mendes’s resurgence after the first Aldo loss.

Also, It’s absurd to discredit Frankie and KZ as well. Those guys in their Prime, beat most of the Top Featherweights of today. A Prime Frankie vs Topuria would be a SCRAP.
Don't forget Faber either. People hate on him for getting tons of title shots, but until he faced Frankie, he never lost a non-title fight.

Aldo also faced a wide variety of competition too. He fought strikers, wrestlers, BJJ guys, and everything in-between. Max and Volk never really faced that variety of competition.

The same is true of Frankie. After the first Maynard fight in 2008 to 2018, his only losses were to the LW champ Bendo (and Frankie was robbed in the rematch) and Aldo. He beat everyone else at LW and FW, including Faber, Mendes and many other good fighters. 10 year streak where he lost to no one outside of title fights.

Sorry but not even close
Given the trajectory of their careers, despite head to head wins, im hard pressed to put Max or Volk above him

His run was incredible, monumentous, and unbelievable. Max and Volk looked amazing in their own rights, but the lack of longevity means you almost certainly have to concede that Aldo was and is the GOAT at the weight class

None were allowed to go up back then.

Aldo was demanded to relinquish the title before trying to get the LW title, that's why he never moved up to fight Pettis.
McGregor was stripped of the FW title 2 weeks after winning the LW belt.

A little missing context on this badly beaten dead horse:

Aldo turned pro at age 17.

The anti Aldo crowd love to talk about fights he lost 11-15 years into his career when he had 27-30+ fights the bulk of them at the most elite level, multiple knee surgeries, and many many wars including dark ages Brazilian gym wars which were basically unsanctioned full in fights.

Aldo thru 26 fights 25-1 10 title fight wins
Volk thru 26 fights 25-1 5 title fight wins.

Aldo fights 27-35 record 3-6
Volk fights 27-30 record 1-3

So yes, his milage caught up to him, but not until he had amassed roughly TWICE as many title fight wins as the next best guys have done.

Also for the evolution of sport crowd:

Aldo is the primary driving factor for the evolution of FW.
The whole division spent a decade trying to figure out how to beat HIM.

If Aldo fought in this era, he would have the same advanced knowledge and training methods of modern era fighers, (and possibly less injuries and better medical care)
or if Volk and Max were to try their hand at the era Aldo dominated, they would NOT have the benefit of learning from the era Aldo dominated.

If you fail so many takedowns, you should lose the fight by default. Doesn't matter what happened otherwise.

I agree. I’d say that a fighter shouldn’t be able to win by spamming failed td attempts over and over again which is why I think fighters should get points for successfully defending against td attempts.
