Green Bay Packers 2021 Offseason

On a serious note people confused by the Tonyan contract and stuff I think need to put more stock in some of the rumors about Rodgers this offseason.

The story once you get past the ridiculous "I want to be traded" shit that Schefter started a huge issue Rodgers has had with the team as a whole the last several years has been personnel decisions. Not JUST the Love drafting (though Rodgers keeps trying to maintain that draft pick isn't what led to this) but the way the front office treated guys that had been on the team for awhile.

Everyone wants to be the next Patriots with that long time of sustained success and Bill runs that team like a cut-throat business. Part of me feels Rodgers isn't a huge fan of that and you can see taht in how he felt about some of these moves.

- Jordy offered a laughable contract
- The just outright let Sitton and Lang walk with either no contract offer or a laughable one
- Cut Kumerow the fucking DAY AFTER he praised the guy
- Let Bulaga walk though even I could understand that one given the price tag he wanted and got
- They let Linsley leave without offering him a deal
- Geronimo (even though I'm glad he left) was allowed to leave without a contract and Rodgers liked him (why who knows)

A guy as talented as Rodgers should at least get a heads up on some of these if not SOME say. You really think the front office couldn't have had Rodgers talk to say Bulaga and Linsley and be like "I know you can get paid a fat check in free agency but why not stick around and keep the band together" and those two wouldn't have at least THOUGHT about taking a smaller deal to keep the unit together?

Jordy being offered that joke of a contract is what started this years ago though.

Them messing around with Tonyan’s contract to offset the cap hit is an attempt to keep a guy Rodgers liked and came to trust around for another year or two. It’s an effort to show him “we’ve been listening, we won't do to Big Bob what we did to your buddy Jordy and Jake".

EDIT 2:
They would likely be able to succeed more in this if they were to find a way to extend Adams as well as take more than a "kick the tires" look at Julio. The Packers straight up can't afford Julio but where there's a will there's a way.... the Chiefs had $57 in cap space and still managed to extend Mahomes, Frank Clark, Tyreek, and keep Sammy Watkins around for another year.

Yup.

Also cut Mike Daniels and ghosted Micah Hyde in the same way as Linsley. Lane Taylor too, I think.

Cutting Mike Daniels sucked but I kinda understood it at the time. You had Kenny Clark still on his rookie deal and Daniels was coming off like a torn achilles wasn't he?

Micah Hyde they ghosted but at the same time everyone knew they wouldn't be able to afford to keep him. I was happy for Hyde getting a fat fucking payday.

Lane Taylor is the one that hurt. Character pick, the guy did a TON of work for the folks in Green Bay that wasn't football related and was doing the best in one on one drills at training camp last offseason...

Off that depressing topic, NFL Next Gen Stats graded Rashan Gary as in the top 10 of most disruptive pass rushers last season:

If it goes to the pic of just him it's on the second slide.

YES, I am still gotten to the team passed on this:

And traded the pick away that became Watt for this:

Yeah, Taylor was most disappointing to me too. Especially since he signed for $2m/1yr elsewhere. Suuuuper affordable for a guy who was a firmly above average guard.

Good to see in re Gary, but my worry continues to be that he hasn't shown ability to win around the edge. Or....really shown any pass rush moves.

I think looking at that list... I notice 3 BIG TIME names not on it.

Having those three along with Jaire locking down one receiver has to be helping Gary get free.

I know sacks aren't everything, but Gary has to make some more splash plays. Especially when you look at where he was drafted: 1st round/12th overall pick. I'm looking at 11 sacks for him in 2021.

After seeing what Atlanta got for Julio Jones, what is the real market for Rodgers? Would the Packers benefit enough from a trade to offset the cap room they would gain if he refuses to play? Either way, they would be playing without Aaron but one way, they wouldn't have to play against him.

If they trade Rodgers, they should package Adams with him too.

It's official. Rodgers is a no show.

"Can we please have Julio Jones?"

"We have Devin Funchess at home."

I'd love for the Packers to make a play for Julio but he likely wanted an extension with his new team and the Packers straight couldn't afford Julio.

It's ironic but the only way the Packers could have afforded Julio would have been if Rodgers retired.

Yes, there have been numerous issues over the years with Mark Murphy and now Brian Noobernoob.

As eloquently noted above, Jordy Nelson was offered a 3 year $3 million contract, barely above the 10 year minimum veteran contract which was $940K a year. Complete BS and this was Brian Noobernoob's first year as GM.

Of course there's all the O-linemen and WR/TE that were let go without a single phone call to Rodgers. Another big one that isn't talked about is this one below:

Aaron Rodgers and the Packer's QB coach, who is his closest coach, Alex Van Pelt was fired and Murphy and Noobernoob didn't even have the courtesy to let Rodgers know. His QB coach was fired and he found out through Twitter.

The nail in the coffin is, of course, moving up in the first round to select the supposed air apparent. Too many fans will say "The team doesn't have to tell Rodgers, it's par for the course..." yet here's what happened in other places:

1. The Vikings drafted a QB and even had the courtesy to inform 3 year Vikings QB and a guy who has never been All Pro and only 1 career playoff victory, that they were going to draft a QB.

2. The Bucs drafted a QB but not before talking to Brady and Brady had 1 year under his belt with the Bucs organization.

3. In 2017, the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes but not before consulting NUMEROUS TIMES with Alex Smith, who had only been with the Chiefs for 4 years.

4. Heck, the frickin Bears informed Andy Dalton, who had yet to play a single down for the Bears, that they would be selecting Justin Fields.

Look at those 4 points above. Not a single one of those QBs were "homegrown" QB talents selected by the organizations let alone someone that had been with those organizations for a long period of time, let alone 16 years. With all the disrespect over Brian Noobernoob's first three years and then moving up to select a QB without telling your star, Superbowl winnning, sure fire first ballot HOF QB is as blatantly disrespectful as one could be. I love my Packers and will always root for them but anyone in Rodger's shoes would feel the way he feels considering what other teams are willing to do for lesser QBs who aren't even "tenured" hometeam QBs

The talk I saw is that while Brian is partially responsible for at least the Love pick (he was high on him is the rumors)... Brian wanted to inform Rodgers of the decision and Murphy is the one that dropped the ball on that, the QB coach, and the various releases/letting folks walk.

EDIT:
I do feel really bad for Love in all this. He's stuck in a shitty situation through no fault of his own and it sounds like the preassure is getting to him. He didn't convert on either of his 2 minute drills yesterday and was overthrowing guys a lot.

It's on Murphy. He specifically took it upon himself to facilitate communication, knowing that it was backup in communication that made the last regime rotten.

In reality, the dude is just worthless.
