EU passes law requiring all devices to charge with USB-C; Apple will have to ditch lightning ports

I bought a new mac last year; it had been YEARS since I bought a new one. I didn't even notice till I got it that there was not outlet for a flash drive. I have to pony up another 100$ to get the adaptor so I can do work on my new laptop (still using my old most of the time) utilizing my flash drives.
When you say adaptor are you talking about something like this to use your flash drives?

I was under the impression that wireless charging would be the future, but it doesn't seem to have caught on
Wireless charging consumes more power the greater the distance is. I think it got into something stupid like at couple of feet the phone requires 10x normal amount of energy to charge

Yeah but on the very rare occasion that they actually get something right like this, we should be supportive.

Call me cynical (it's okay, I am) but I would like to know their motivation for doing this. If it's a bill, like in the US, what else was in the bill? Who is really benefiting from this? Is anyone getting screwed? Who sponsored this and what led to it being passed?

I have just observed, at least in the US, bills that get passed often benefit corporations, and rarely the little guy. Often, not exclusively. Maybe this bill is one of those rare occurrences.

Edit: OK the EU is 90% full of shit but this is a good idea.

EU is the best place to live in the world in average.

I couldn't care less since I've never owned an apple product.... But this some weird nanny state shit.

Capitalism works best with regulation, fuck em.

I would definitely disagree there... especially currently.

Enjoy your upcoming winter with no heating and insanely expensive gas though... should be fun.

The only ones this fucks is Apple as they are the only company that are still being assholes, refusing to standardise and selling stupidly expensive accessories with their own proprietary BS tech.

They can go and eat a giant bag of dicks.

I think relying upon russian gas was a mistake, and the US sitting on oil and gas makes it cheaper for sure.

But countries in Europe are capping energy costs and nationalising power companies, I expect new best practice will emerge. I don't believe there will be outages.

The war has impacted things a lot, but it has not changed the quality of life to a great degree, and one can still move and work anywhere in the EU.

Take healthcare for example, just one of an endless list of reasons why the EU is preferable.

/Looks around him and sees great weather, abundant natural resources, no war, little crime or pollution and one of the highest average net worth countries in the world.

...LOL fun to visit but you can keep the EU as a place to live.

Looks over at hurricanes, tornadoes, kids murdered in schools and huge wealth disparity, no social safety net, world's number one exporter of war, long working hours and few holidays etc..

Top 7 happiest places to live are in Europe, USA is beaten by the Czech Republic lol.

I think I'm good.

As long as the US protects your sissy asses from China ;) and then there is the wild life that is trying to kill you.

Good. That's what they get for trying to be cute. Annoying bastards not using normal cords.

Governments shouldn't be telling companies which chargers they can force their consumers to use, consumers should be telling companies to fuck off...

I suppose this is good initially but how’s this work long term? Like if a company finds a better method of charging via cord, wouldn’t this either stop it from going to market or even discourage any research into it in the first place? I’m completely get it’s a bitch to have a bunch of cords for different devices but still unsure about this.

Laptops? I love the idea of phones and tablets having to standardize, but I'm not sure it's fitting for laptops unless there's a way to get exceptions. A normal email and some streaming laptop sure.

Can USB-C supply the wattage needed for gaming laptops? I'm seeing they top out at 100W, but there are some articles from 2021 that say 240W USB-C charging is on the way. But I'm not seeing anything about that actually being a reality.

My gaming laptop has a 230W power supply, and it's not at all a high end one.

Let’s be honest with ourselves here, we will all still have a cable drawer

I still have a tote full of every ac/dc adapter imaginable. Different connection types, different voltages, different wattage.

I haven't used any of them in 5 years, and I'm too afraid to throw any of them out.

I haven't owned an Apple product since I had a IIE as a kid, and don't support the "walled garden" approach in anything, but I also don't agree with legally requiring specific standardised cables.
If someone has a better system, they shouldn't be prevented from attempting to implement it. Usually it's actually detrimental not to adopt the most commonly used standards anyway.
