Social Joy Reid Defends Books with Pedophilia in Public School Librairies

And what am I doing? Why would you want little kids to have access to stuff like this. I'm my opinion, it's very telling

The people that created the mechanism being used to purge libraries don't care about the "extreme books" that few people read, that's just cover. It has an added layer of defense in that people sitting in your seat can call any objectors degenerates.

You asked me if I want little kids to have access to this stuff, and that's a silly question on it's face. Little kids aren't reading this.

No idea if the books you're mentioning are included or not, but they're complaining about books in the school library; not the curriculum.

Think of it as the same reason that Newsweek is in the school library, but Playboy isnt.
These books aren’t porn. In fact, the vast majority of these books couldn’t even be intelligently argued to be porn. Maus? The Illustrated Diary of Anne Frank? Books by Judy Blume?
I posted a source earlier from a group tracking these bans, stating that only 22% of books (out of nearly 1700 titles) contain descriptions of sex of *any* kind; that includes books on puberty and growing up, sex ed, relationships, etc.
I think it’s noteworthy that these debates always focus on Gender Queer, or Lawnboy, which are a) misrepresented in these debates, and b) not at all representative of the books that are being banned.

Recently, Fairfax County, VA banned Gender Queer and Lawnboy after a parent complained. After being reviewed by committees made up of school administrators, librarians, parents, and students, both books were reinstated.

The committee said of Gender Queer:
  • The book is a well-written, scientifically based narrative of one person’s journey with gender identity that contains information and perspective that is not widely represented. This depiction includes the difficulties nonbinary and asexual individuals may face. The book has literary value in its structure, voice, and themes and has won literary awards.
  • Students with a related experience will feel affirmed and others can gain understanding and empathy.
  • The resources referenced in the book provide access to additional, reliable information.
  • The book neither depicts nor describes pedophilia.
The committee said of Lawn Boy:
  • The book is an accessible examination of race, class, socio-economic struggle, and sexual identity. It paints a portrait of the substantial obstacles faced by those who are marginalized by society. It is an uplifting and humanizing depiction of navigating through setbacks with resiliency to reach goals and will resonate with students.
  • The themes of this book are affirming for students who will recognize that they are not alone as they experience similar systemic challenges and societal prejudices.
  • The book has literary value as a narrative representing the perspective of a significant portion of students in Fairfax County Public Schools with a variety of backgrounds.
  • There is no pedophilia present in the book.

Depends on the context and the grade available at.

For example, a biography that includes a section where the author writes about being sexually assaulted and how it affected their life would be appropriate for teenagers imo.

Same with an educational book that defines rape as part of a section that talks about consent in sexual encounters.

The point is that this Moms For Liberty campaign to remove books to "protect the children" has gone way beyond this, removing books for things that are completely benign to the vast majority of people, because they're right wing religious zealots.
Zealots, hypocrites, morons. It's all amazing.

Tina Descovich is a cofounder of Moms for Liberty and is currently on social media complaining that education about the Holocaust has become poor. She and her allies are blaming this on the left.

But her organization is responsible for getting Anne Frank's Diary banned from Florida schools, under the pretext that it's "sexually explicit." Anne Frank's Diary, along with Night by Elie Wiesel, have been the two quintessential books about the holocaust in American schools since the 50's.

Unless you believe violent video games and tv/films are directly leading to kids shooting people, the "these kids are going to rape each other with dildos if they read this book" arguments are disingenuous

It’s actually the opposite of the parental dynamic I discussed: it’s asking your kid to parent you—particularly in the realm of your adult porn intake, which is super fucking weird.

I think fathers taking an active role in discussing the things that can be harmful about porn—such as the fact that it’s not a realistic depiction of sex, or the negative effects of watching too much porn— is great.

I think a father making their kid download an app to track their adult parent’s porn usage is weird as fuck. Even for alleged “accountability.” “Dad, I got an alert that you were watching Big Burly Ass Pounding Volume 7 again! Jesus will be disappointed in you!”

—That shit is weird.
Gotta love how you guys can't even fathom someone not furiously masturbating to "Big Burly Ass Pounding" and project it onto other people. There is no "porn intake", that's literally the entire point. Whereas you guys seem to demand hypocrisy, some people prefer to lead by example.

Oh, I can fathom all sorts of people not masturbating to “Big Burly Ass Pounding“— Mike Johnson just isn’t one of them.

Of course. And it's because they know that if they were honest about their intentions their organization would crumble because of how unpopular they'd be.

Yeah, that is pretty weird.

They're all perverts and pedo's. Wrap that around your head and things will be a lot clearer.

Comically, some have done that.

The first I remember was after some school shooting (I can't even keep track of them), the Trump White House released a comical compilation video of video game violence, which they claimed was responsible for the gun violence in schools in America. Probably more than half of the video wasn't even gun violence. It was mostly zombies and Nazis getting bludgeoned and stabbed lol. But because Daddy made this ridiculous argument, they had to defend him.

Most recently when the trailer for GTA6 was released, Andrew Tate criticized it, so many posters on here did as well.

I’ll go buy the book and read it, and then comment if I think it’s ok for elementary/middle school, hell maybe I’ll say it should not even be in high school

One way to prevent future mass shootings, President Donald Trump suggested Monday, was to take a firm stance against violent video games.

"We must stop the glorification of violence in our society. This includes the gruesome and grisly video games that are now commonplace. It is too easy today for troubled youth to surround themselves with a culture that celebrates violence. We must stop or substantially reduce this and it has to begin immediately," Trump said in brief remarks from the White House after massacres in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, killed at least 31 people over the weekend.

Had some good laughs at the posts I’ve read
Do any of you realize that kids can find all of these books on the World Wide Web
The problem isn’t the libraries, it’s beyond that at this point

I really don't need to say anything. You guys defending this shit says it all. <Fedor23>
I actually think most of them truly believe it's disgusting, and would be the fastest on the trigger to call it out if it was coming from conservatives. It's a Liberal thing though, so tribal instincts makes them attempt to softly justify it, with a bunch of deflective word spew.

You'll notice that none of them have the balls to actually outright support this shit. It's always "it's complicated", which is Liberal code for "I can't defend it, but I'll muddy the waters as best I can, because I'm too cowardly and too much of a sheep, to call a deranged Liberal position out."

Agreed. It’s a stupid discussion.

I just take issue with someone claiming exercising your voting privileges to make changes to tax payer efforts is authoritarian.
