I've read the US developed a pretty good autoloader back then but choose not to use it. The French have a supposedly safe autoloader in the Leclerc.
I'm unsure if an autoloader is inherently bad but the entire T-72 series is just obsolete. It was a decent tank back then but modern missiles such as the NLAW make it too vulnerable.
The M-60 Patton or the Leopard I are closer to it, there is no comparison between the T-72/90 and any modern western tank.
Russia is still in the 80s.
From what I understand, the Russian autoloaders at least, the ammo isn't stored as securely. So it isn't that the autoloading function is bad but the design requirements to use it make the tank more vulnerable. It operates as intended, it reduces the crew requirements by one, but the trade off is survivability which for most of their service has been fine. They never had to fight anyone that could actually fight back like this and really, no one has.
Abrams ammo is stored in secure compartments almost like a ship's bulkhead and is designed to direct the blast outward away from the crew. It's proven very effective at crew survivability and even of the tank itself. Even the Saudi's haven't managed to have one cook off like Russian tanks often do.
