He said those words publicly, in press conferences. How many different times and different ways does he need to say it?

Over 73 million people watched the debate. How many are aware of those other recent quotes? How many forgot about 2016? His own supporters didn't remember it until they went digging.

It has been explained ad nauseam why he should have answered the question and why it matters now. Biden has also repeatedly said he doesn't support defunding the police or violent protests but he got asked about that once again. It hurt him with the far left to give that answer at the debate when people are actually watching and it matters most, but he and his supporters aren't crying about it and complaining how it isn't fair.

So it only matters that he said it at a future date to be determined based on outrage? He's misquoted there. Plain and simple.

Here's the debate overton window:

Is there another group in recorded history that complains as much as Trump and his followers? He is such a huge bitch about literally everything and anything that doesn't go exactly his way. The king of "it's not fair"...

I can honestly say I've never encountered an adult who whines as much as Trump in such a petulant and embarrassing way. Everything is unfair to him. He showed up to the debate and immediately start breaking all the rules he previously agreed to, and as soon as the moderator made an attempt to moderate, he started whining and saying that he's being picked on. The guy does not have a respectable bone in his body.

Trump can’t debate. This was his plan. But I don’t think he thought he would shit the bed this much.
He is so used to bullying everyone with no pushback that running up against ornery ass Joe Biden threw a wrench in the works.

The problem with Trumps campaign is they still think they are running against Hillary. Even Bill Clinton hates Hillary. So being a douche bag to her did not hurt Donny too much. Problem is Joe is not hated. Sure he has done some shitty stuff but not hated. So the same shit they did to Hillary is not working on Joe, but they keep on doing it. I guess that is what you get when all your kids and people they are fucking are getting paid by your campaign.
And, as we clearly saw, nobody on Earth is going to shout over Biden for very long without being told to shut up lol
I truly do not believe that Trump or his camp expected Biden to roll up his sleeves like that. They are all so cowed by Trumps ego that the thought of someone standing up to him must seem ludicrous. It just isn't done.

Are you being serious here? "Roll up his sleeves...."
hahaha

the debate was horrible, Trump looked thin skinned and sulky and Biden looked weak. Voters were turned off by this but if there was a winner it wasn't Biden. Trump was be-boppin' and skattin' all over Joe. Several 10-8 rounds in there

LIke I said earlier, the problem is his kids are all getting paid by the campaign. Also anyone banging a kid gets paid. Ivanka is married but I think Tiffany is single. Tell her you bench teh 275, and you will working and getting paid by Trumps campaign in no time.

The only reason I can think Trump could come up with the strategy he did to try to dominate and constantly interrupt like he did was to try to fluster Biden so his campaign could get a clip of Biden looking confused and senile and not able to handle being president. It didn't work and backfired.

The narrative the Trump campaign pushed for the past couple months that Biden was a vegetable who couldn't complete a sentence was a really bad one. It lowered expectations for Biden. People who were inside a right wing bubble had to be a little confused how Biden was able to speak and handle all the bluster that was thrown at him, so I see many blame Wallace for Trump's poor showing.

Trump's demeanor turned off the suburban woman vote that he was trying to appeal to at the Republican Convention. He is behind in polls. This debate didn't help him and time is running out for him.

Biden isn't sharp as he was 20 years ago but isn't as bad as the edited clips that go around right wing sites. Biden didn't do great but all he had to do was do ok to hold on to the lead and he did that.

If Biden talked about forrest cities the Trump people would have been talking that up.

I'd like to see the 2 candidates in isolation, asked the same questions by a roundtable of diverse moderators without hearing the others answer. Just for one debate.

The idea that Trump was going to create a wedge between the far left and the moderate left Biden was also a failure.

And in doing so he undermined the idea that Biden is a puppet of the far left or part of the far left.

Trump's poor showing can be summarized as Trump gave the single worst answer to the easiest question of the entire debate.

And that's what's most memorable from the debate.... Trump whiffed is a gimme. Trump is the Billy Buckner of debates.

The format you describe exists; it's called interviews.

For a debate, I would like to see the candidates ask each other questions.

You could learn something about the candidates' priorities based on the questions the candidates ask.

And the impossibility of knowing the questions ahead of time would lead to less scripted answers.

I don't want to see a bunch of moderators and two candidates in isolation anymore than I would want to see two fighters fight each other in separate rings.

Call it what you want so long as there is a politically diverse pool of moderators.

That is true your post made me laugh. It was a softball and he blew it. The answer to the election integrity question was worse imo. With the Proud Boy thing his short attention span got him and I think he did mean do disavow them but wanted to shift attention to the left.

But the election integrity answer filled with conspiracy bs right after Biden encouraging people to vote came off badly and he intended to have that answer.

Lol moderators had nothing to do with the fact that they both gave horrible answers.... The typical sherdogger would have defeated either of them in a debate assuming they can speak as well as they write.
